Adding Barkevious Mingo a low-risk, low-expectation move by Colts

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million with linebacker Barkevious Mingo. He has 119 tackles and seven sacks in his four-year career.

Terms: One year, $2.5 million

Grade D: Mingo arrived in the NFL as a pass-rusher when he was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2013 draft. But those pass-rushing skills have rarely been on display so far, as Mingo has only seven sacks in his career. He has spent time on special teams the past couple of seasons in stops with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.

What it means: One of the first things new general manager Chris Ballard said when he was hired in January was that he wanted competition on the roster from the first player all the way down to the 63rd. Bringing in Mingo on a one-year deal is a low risk for the Colts. Linebacker was arguably the weakest position on the defense, which finished 30th in the NFL, for the Colts last season. The Colts are looking to restock the position because Robert Mathis retired, Erik Walden and Trent Cole are free agents and D'Qwell Jackson was cut. They had only 35 sacks, which was tied for 19th in the NFL, last season. Mingo will have the opportunity to prove himself as a pass-rusher again.

What's the risk? It's very minimal because the Colts didn't make a heavy financial commitment to Mingo. At the same time, there's no reason to get excited and think he'll be the answer for the Colts' pass rush. He played only 47 snaps on defense, which was last on the Patriots. A lot of those snaps came late in games when he was used as a spot pass-rusher. One of Mingo's issues is that he doesn't have a set position at linebacker, and it's not known whether he's better suited on the inside or on the outside. Colts defensive coordinator Ted Monachino might experiment with Mingo at both positions.
