Throughout WWE history, March has placed us smack dab in the middle of WrestleMania season. Fifteen WrestleMania events have occurred in March. That rich legacy brings an enormous amount of pro wrestling history and prominent matches.
Take a look at a selection of WWE PLE highlights below:
WrestleMania I - March 31, 1985: Hulk Hogan & Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff
WrestleMania I set the stage for the annual extravaganza and a good deal of the pressure to deliver a successful result depended on its headline match.
Match quality aside, the main event was loaded with high profile wrestlers, athletes and pop culture.
Hogan and Piper were among the premier babyface/heel combos. Mr. T was Hogan's tag team partner, Muhammad Ali was the match enforcer, former New York Yankees manager Billy Martin was the ring announcer and Liberace was the timekeeper.
The first WrestleMania main event wasn't just a match - it was a spectacle.
WrestleMania III - March 29, 1987: Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant
One of the greatest builds to a WrestleMania match occurred in 1987. In February, Andre the Giant (billed as being undefeated) carried out a renowned heel turn on his former friend Hulk Hogan and challenged him for the WWE championship the following month at WrestleMania III.
In front of over 93,000 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome, Hogan and Andre battled in one of the most famous pro wrestling matches all-time.
After failing to slam Andre earlier in the match, Hogan rebounded and performed a legendary body slam heard around the world. He followed that up with his patented leg drop for the win to a massive ovation.
WrestleMania X - March 20, 1994: Owen Hart vs. Bret Hart
The opening match on any PLE (but especially WrestleMania) is among the most important spots on the card. The crowd is energized, ready to go and the opening bout is in a position to capitalize on the excitement and take it to the next level.
Owen Hart vs. Bret Hart at WrestleMania X did that and then some.
One of the most acclaimed PLE openers in WWE history was an in-ring clinic magnified even further by the fact that it featured two brothers from one of wrestling's most celebrated families vying for supremacy.
Owen and Bret were as smooth as anyone in the ring and that technical ability was on display here - the Madison Square Garden crowd were treated to a classic.
WrestleMania XII - March 31, 1996: Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart
"The Boyhood Dream has come true for Shawn Michaels." That was the line voiced by Vince McMahon on commentary following the first-ever iron man match on WWE TV.
Michaels, coming off his second straight Royal Rumble victory earned a championship opportunity against Bret Hart. It wasn't just any match though - it was an iron man match guaranteed to last one hour. The objective of the match was to earn more victories within the hour time limit than your opponent.
After an hour, Michaels and Hart were tied 0-0. Rather than end in a draw, the match went into overtime with Michaels earning the final pinfall and his first WWE championship.
WrestleMania XIV - March 29, 1998: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Shawn Michaels
The Attitude Era helped take WWE mainstream by way of its risky and rebellious storylines. While widely considered to have started with the Montreal Screwjob late in 1997, it was the WrestleMania XIV main event between Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels that truly brought the product to the point of departure and launched it.
One reason: Mike Tyson was involved as the special ring enforcer. Originally shaped as a foe for Austin, Tyson ended up turning on Michaels and completed the three count that made Austin WWE champion.
Beyond that, this was the beginning of Austin's supremacy within the WWE. The leader of the Attitude Era captured his first WWE championship.
WrestleMania X8 - March 17, 2002: The Rock vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan
If you want to experience the apex of audience engagement, watch The Rock vs. Hogan at WrestleMania X8. The two hadn't even locked up in the ring before the crowd took matters into their own hands.
The Rock was the intended babyface in the match with Hogan serving as the heel, but Toronto changed the dynamic. Their overwhelming support for Hogan completely flipped the script and added to what was the true main event of the show, despite not being slated as the final match.
WrestleMania XXVI - March 28, 2010: The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
This match was billed as The Streak vs. Career. At this point, The Undertaker had won 17 straight WrestleMania matches heading into the show, including a win over Shawn Michaels the previous year at WrestleMania 25. Michaels demanded a rematch and put his unparalleled in-ring career on the line in this follow-up.
After another gem of a match, The Undertaker extended his streak to 18-0 and Michaels bid farewell to the crowd in an emotional WrestleMania moment.
WrestleMania 31 - March 29, 2015: Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns
This WrestleMania main event began as a one-on-one match between WWE champion Brock Lesnar and 2015 Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns. However, that's not how it ended.
Just over 15 minutes into a hard-fought battle between Lesnar and Reigns, Rollins' music hit and he sprinted to the ring with his Money in the Bank briefcase in hand. Rollins confirmed he was cashing in his contract, which turned the match a triple threat.
As Lesnar lifted Rollins onto his shoulders for an F-5 attempt, Reigns connected with a spear to his original opponent. Lesnar rolled out of the ring and Rollins hit his patented stomp on Reigns to win the WrestleMania 31 main event he wasn't initially a part of - and his first WWE championship.
As Rollins celebrated on the entrance ramp, Michael Cole declared it the "heist of the century," on commentary.
