Young Queensland player dies

One of Australia's most promising young players, Michael Tabrett, died suddenly at the weekend, the Queensland Rugby Union announced on Monday.

A notice of his death was published on the Queensland Reds official website but details of how he died were not released.

"The Reds players and staff are deeply shocked and saddened by his untimely death and our thoughts and prayers are with his family," the notice said.

Tabrett played fullback or on the wing and had appeared for Australia A, Australia under-21 and the national sevens team.

He had also played 11 matches for Queensland Reds, including six Super 12 games and a match against the British and Irish Lions in 2001.
