Samoa give up on Leota

Samoa have finally given up on Trevor Leota playing for them in the World Cup.

Leota announced two weeks ago that he would be remaining with Wasps instead of going to Australia for financial reasons.

But Samoa still named him in their squad in the hope that he would be tempted to change his mind.

Now Samoan coach John Boe has finally thrown in the towel, saying: "He just can't afford to be away from his club for the duration of the World Cup. He's devastated but that's the way it goes. It's just another player we've lost. It's never-ending.

"We get lots of sympathy but, unfortunately, that's as far as it goes. No one seems prepared to do anything practical to prevent this happening."

Leota's place has been taken by New Zealand-based hooker Mahoni Schwalger. "Mahoni's a very good player and we welcome him but losing Trevor's experience is a real blow," Boe added.
