Scotland coach Ian McGeechan is confident influential duo Tom Smith and Kenny Logan will be fit and ready for the World Cup.
Northampton prop Smith and Wasps wing Logan were notable absentees from the XV named today to take on Wales in Saturday's warm-up Test match.
Smith's injury jinx struck again when he broke his finger against Italy on Saturday after only just returning to the side.
It presented the Scotland management with an unwanted headache ahead of October's showpiece tournament in Australia but while Smith was set to undergo an operation today, his international coach is refusing to panic just yet.
McGeechan said: ``It would obviously have been nice to give Tom a game having missed [the tour of] South Africa and not really playing much since the Six Nations.
``He is having a small operation today, but the way it's been done is actually going to accelerate his progress.
``His training and involvement, apart from the contact, will be there for most of the time so there's not much concern.''
Logan was also substituted early in the victory over Italy with neck and head injuries.
He will have a precautionary scan later this week but McGeechan was again quick to allay fears over the player.
He said: ``He is seeing a neurologist later this week, but that's just a precaution.
``It's his neck, but as the doctor said he's got rid of a few aches he has been carrying for the past few years.
``If you get an injury like that it's best that you have somebody independent to look at it.''
McGeechan made wholesale changes today to his side for Saturday's latest World Cup warm-up at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
His players started their preparations for the tournament with an impressive win over Italy at Murrayfield on Saturday, but he has opted to draft in 11 new faces for this friendly.
Out of the 15 went Logan, Smith, Ben Hinshelwood, James McLaren, Andrew Henderson, Gordon Ross, Mike Blair, Robert Russell, Jason White, Nathan Hines and Simon Taylor.
Into the side came Gavin Kerr, Graeme Beveridge, Glenn Metcalfe, Rory Kerr, Andy Craig, Brendan Laney, Gregor Townsend, Gordon Bulloch, Stuart Grimes,Andrew Mower and Martin Leslie.
McGeechan explained: ``It's important to give some of the younger players the opportunity and we've got a good mix of young and experience in there for this game.''
He also made two positional changes with Jon Petrie moving from seven to eight and Bath youngster Simon Danielli switching wings.
But despite Mower ousting the Glasgow player from his favoured position, director of rugby Jim Telfer challenged him to prove he should have that shirt for the World Cup.
He said: ``Andrew Mower is our number one number seven at the moment and Jon Petrie has to push him out of that position and that's good.''
Edinburgh's Scott Murray remains captain of the side which did so well against the Italians while Bruce Douglas also retained his place.
``We wanted to cover two positions and Saturday was very important for him [Petrie] to be playing seven at international level,'' continued McGeechan.
``As I said last week he had been practising there and working there since the Six Nations so it was important to get him in there.
``But the priority is getting a gameplan for everybody so it was important to have someone like Andrew Mower in and starting as well and that's what we've tried to do.
``We are starting to build a gameplan up internationally and a lot of players going into Saturday have the same challenge of a game and an international game.
``If you are giving match practice to everybody then you can't have somebody sat on the sidelines and what I wanted was to put experience in both back linesin these first two games and to a certain extent in the forwards as well.
``You are trying to build up match practice and then also get them playing together and you can only do that if you are giving them the opportunity.''
Beveridge will make his first start for Scotland in a cap match at scrum-half - his previous appearances have been as a substitute - while Grimes becomes the 17th Scot to reach the landmark of 50 caps and Bulloch becomes Scotland's most-capped hooker.
He will win his 53rd cap on Saturday, surpassing the record held by Hawick's Colin Deans.
