Hundreds bit farewell to Smith

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Sydney on Monday to bid farewell to former Wallaby coach Greg SMith.

Smith passed away last Tuesday in a Sydney hospice, aged 52, after battling a brain tumour over the past five years.

Former national coaches including Alan Jones, David Brockhoff, Bob Dwyer and current mentor Eddie Jones, were among the mourners, as were past and present Australian players including former skipper John Eales, Jason Little and Phil Kearns.

Former pupils from Randwick Boys High where Smith used to be an English master were also present to pay their respects to to Smith who coached the Wallabies in 1996-97.

Smith underwent emergency surgery for a brain tumour four years ago and again in November last year after wrapping up a short stint as coach of the Fijian national team.

Smith`s highlight during his 19-Test tenure of Australia was winning Tests against Italy, Scotland, Ireland and Wales during a 12-match unbeaten tour of Europe at the end of the 1996 season.

He eventually stepped down after a string of poor results in the 1997 Tri-Nations, and soon after was diagnosed with the tumour.

Smith leaves his wife Janet and teenage daughters, Alana and Rachel to whom Scrum.com would like to pass on our condolences.
