Waratahs openside flanker Phil Waugh ensured the Brumbies weren't doing all the celebrating this week when he was named the Australian Super 12 player of the year.
Waugh finished with 17 points and not surprisingly held off a pack of Brumbies to claim the award. Points were awarded on a 3-2-1 basis by the referees who controlled games involving Australian teams.
Brumbies flyhalf Stephen Larkham finished second with 11 points, while team-mates George Gregan, winger and fullback Andrew Walker and openside flanker George Smith, shared third spot on 10.
Waugh, who finished second to the Reds' Chris Latham in last year's competition, polled points in eight of the 10 matches he played in. He missed the Waratahs' final game against the Reds due to a foot injury.
The 21-year-old is a former Australian Schoolboys and Under 21 captain and earlier this week was named in the 31-man Australian squad to meet the British Lions.
Reds openside flanker David Croft was named 2001 Rookie of the Series.
In other awards, Eddie Jones, who was earlier confirmed as Rod MacQueen's replacement as Wallaby coach, was named Coach of the Year. Peter Marshall was named Referee of the Series by a panel of international journalists.
The Australian Try of the Series, as selected by the Fox Sports television commentary team, was Queensland pivot Nathan Spooner's effort against the Bulls.
Previous winners of the Australian Player of the Series were Latham in 2000, Joe Roff in 1999 and Larkham and Queensland skipper John Eales in 1998.
