NBL, 36ers investigating White comments

The Adelaide 36ers and the NBL are investigating comments made by 36ers co-captain Kevin White about outgoing coach Joey Wright on social media.

White posted a series of inflammatory tweets, including screenshots, following Wright's departure from the NBL club on Thursday.

Three-time NBL coach-of-the-year Wright, who coached his final game for the 36ers against rivals Perth Wildcats on February 15, ended his seven-year tenure at Adelaide in what the club described as a mutual decision.

"The Adelaide 36ers are investigating comments made in tweets from co-captain Kevin White," the 36ers statement read.

"The club takes the allegations seriously and will investigate further as part of an ongoing review. No further comments will be made until the conclusion of the review."

The NBL also released a statement later on Friday.

"The NBL is aware of comments made by Adelaide 36ers co-captain Kevin White on social media today.

"The league takes the matter very seriously and is working closely with the Adelaide 36ers and the Australian Basketball Players' Association to seek further information."

Wright appeared on SEN radio to respond to the allegations saying "Every team has comments they make behind closed doors."

"We had a team that wasn't cohesive and my attempt to bring cohesiveness, there were a lot of messages - tough messages - about them liking each other and them hanging out with each other.

"The comments that were on a private chat message between coaches is an area where coaches go to vent.

"Players have their chat messages that if published it would just look disastrous - it would defame everybody. And we have a chat group with players and coaches both in it. I could put out messages that would make every single player on that team look like an idiot, and that's just not what you do.

"I would never, never betray a player's confidence or another coach's confidence - what they say to me will always stay with me. I would never do that to him (White), even though he has done that to me."

Wright went on to label assistant coach Darren Golley as the source of the leaked screenshot.
