MARINA BAY, SINGAPORE -- Max Verstappen is confident Red Bull is in the fight for pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix after topping the first practice session and finishing within 0.4s of the fastest time in second practice.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg set the fastest time of the evening in the second practice session, 0.3s clear of Kimi Raikkonen in second and 0.4s clear of Verstappen. Despite falling to third in the night session, which is more representative of the conditions for qualifying, Verstappen is confident he can make up the difference in qualifying.

"Yeah it was a positive day for us, maybe the second practice could have been a bit better but we are still more or less there," he said. "We know what to work on for tomorrow, so we will analyse a lot tonight to see what we can do for tomorrow.

"For sure on this track four tenths is nothing, if you find a little bit of a better balance you get more confidence in the car and you get the lap time."

Verstappen is running an upgraded Renault power unit this weekend, but he played down its significance: "It's a new engine but nothing special. Just a new engine."
