Nico Rosberg admitted he simply was not quick enough to beat teammate Lewis Hamilton to pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, but is looking to the start of Sunday's race to turn the tables.

Rosberg was nearly 0.5s slower than Hamilton in the pole position shootout at Monza, but did not try to play down the size of the gap with an excuse.

"I think the best explanation is that he did some good laps and that's it," Rosberg said. "I had a good weekend up until now and got some good laps in today, they were just not quick enough."

Asked where he lacked the time to Hamilton, Rosberg said: "It is pretty much everywhere, a little bit in every corner.

"But on race fuel I was looking strong on Friday, so from that point of view I am confident for tomorrow."

With a one-stop race likely to limit strategy opportunities, Rosberg said the best chance to get ahead of Hamilton would be at the start.

"It will be difficult after that because with strategy there is not much to do, so the start is going to be important, and then I see."
