Lewis Hamilton: I brought my A-game to Monza

Lewis Hamilton said he was on top form at Monza after claiming pole position for the Italian Grand Prix by half a second.

His Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg had no answer as Hamilton took the fastest time in all three sectors to build up an overall margin of 0.478s around the 5.8km lap.

"I have a very strong feeling and came with my 'A' game today and particularly that last lap, it felt incredible," Hamilton said. "It is such a great track and it has got such a great crowd. A big thank-you to all the people that have come out, but what this team has achieved, as race by race I continue to say, is just phenomenal.

"We are so fortunate to be driving for this team and to be representing them and to be driving a car as it was today, I got it right in the sweet spot and was able to do an exceptional time with it."

Although Hamilton's performance in the pole position shootout was faultless, he locked a tyre on his Q2 run resulting in a small flatspot on the tyres he will start Sunday's race on. If the tyre is significantly damaged, Hamilton will be allowed to change it for a similar one, but he suspects it won't be a problem.

"I didn't really damage the tyres. I just had a small lock-up into Turn 1 and ultimately for the race tomorrow, you want everything to be perfect. I had the pace and so went back out and I was actually up, but I just lost it in the last corner. But the flat spot is minimal, you can't really feel it. I don't think it is going to be a problem."
