BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Esteban Gutierrez says he will remain in Formula One next year despite no official news on his future beyond the end of the current season.
Gutierrez joined Haas this year after spending 2015 on the sidelines as a Ferrari third driver. Haas made clear last week that it will not start talks with drivers about 2017 until after the summer break, but Gutierrez says he already knows what he will be doing next season.
"I know what I'll be doing next year," he said.
Asked if that meant a seat in F1 for 2017, Gutierrez added: "Yes I will of course, this is what I want and this is what I am here for."
However, pushed on whether that meant another year at Haas, Gutierrez was less clear.
"I'm sorry but I cannot be very explicit on that," he said.
Gutierrez said his immediate aim was to score points after three 11th place finishes in the opening 10 races.
"I mean to be honest it's irrelevant for me to think about next year because what I want to achieve is points and I want to achieve good results with what I have at the moment. I think a lot of things have played around in the wrong way for me but whatever is going to be the case is going to be, so at the time I am not frustrated or worried thinking about it."
