MONTREAL, Canada -- Lewis Hamilton beat team-mate Nico Rosberg to pole position by the narrowest of margins at the Canadian Grand Prix, as Mercedes held off the challenge from rivals Ferrari and Red Bull in qualifying.
Hamilton was just 0.062s quicker than Rosberg after setting his fastest lap on his first attempt in Q3. The lap hinged on a mighty first sector but Hamilton was actually slower than Rosberg in the second and third sectors. A slow middle sector on his second attempt meant Hamilton failed to improve, while Rosberg locked a tyre at Turn 1 on his second run, forcing him to abandon the lap.
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was just 0.178s off Hamilton in third after improving on his second run. A brush with the Wall of Champions proved just how hard he was pushing but Ferrari ultimately did not have the pace to challenge the Mercedes duo. Daniel Ricciardo also clipped the Wall of Champions during his fast lap and ended up 0.354s off Hamilton's pole position time in fourth. He was slower than Max Verstappen up until his final attempt, but found the pace when it mattered to beat his Red Bull team-mate by 0.248s.
Kimi Raikkonen's lacklustre weekend continued with a qualifying time 0.589s off team-mate Vettel and only 0.091s faster than fellow Finn Valtteri Bottas. Bottas will line up seventh on the grid ahead of Williams team-mate Felipe Massa in eighth, while Nico Hulkenberg took ninth for Force India ahead of Fernando Alonso in the McLaren.
Sergio Perez was just 0.057s off beating Alonso to a place in Q3, but still managed to finish ahead of Jenson Button in the second McLaren. Button was actually quicker than Alonso through sectors one and two, but a small lock-up on the entry to the hairpin saw him lose just enough time to drop him out of contention for a place in the top-ten shootout.
Daniil Kvyat qualified 13th but will drop to 16th once his three-place grid penalty from the Monaco Grand Prix is applied. That will move the two Haas drivers up a place to 13th and 14th, with Esteban Gutierrez beating team-mate Romain Grosjean by 0.232s.
Carlos Sainz became the first driver to wreck his car against the Wall of Champions on the exit of the final chicane, clouting the concrete with his right rear tyre before dragging his Toro Rosso along the wall all the way to the finish line. The incident caused a brief red flag while the car was removed from the pit straight and left Sainz with the slowest time of Q2.
Jolyon Palmer missed out on a place in Q2 by just 0.015s after pushing to the limit on his hot lap and brushing the wall on the exit of final chicane. Pascal Wehrlein impressed with the 18th fastest time of Q1, beating the two Saubers and finishing just 0.140s shy of Palmer.
Marcus Ericsson was 19th fastest but will receive a three-place grid penalty as punishment for his botched overtaking manoeuvre on team-mate Felipe Nasr in Monaco. That will promote Nasr ahead of Ericsson, but it will be scant consolation after setting a qualifying time 1.028s off his team-mate. Rio Haryanto was the only driver who was slower and brought his session to an early end when he clobbered the wall on the exit of Turn 4 and broke his right rear suspension.
A much bigger collision with the wall at Turn 7 during final practice meant Kevin Magnussen was unable to take part in qualifying, although the stewards are expected to allow him to start from the back of the grid.
