Daniel Ricciardo still frustrated by events at the Spanish GP

Daniel Ricciardo says he is still waking up each morning with the events of the Spanish Grand Prix on his mind after he saw a potential victory turn into a fourth-place finish last Sunday.

Ricciardo had to watch as new team-mate Max Verstappen took victory in Spain and become the youngest race winner in the history of the sport. He had led the race after the two Mercedes took each other out but the outcome of the race thereafter hinged on strategy.

Ricciardo was on a three-stop strategy, which was considered to be the fastest way to victory ahead of the race but ultimately it saw him lose out to team-mate Verstappen on a two-stop strategy as well as the two Ferraris.

"The outcome of the race was frustrating," he admitted. "Is it easy to move on? I wouldn't say easy. But can I move on? Absolutely.

"It's been a few days since the race and I still wake up with it on my mind. I'm going to bed with it off my mind but I'm waking up with it on my mind - it will take a bit of time.

"I think it's more that at the last three races we haven't got the end result we deserve and I think there was always something better there that was available for me. It's just like 'Oh, come on!' but it's racing and it's part of it."

Ricciardo admitted that he had mixed feelings about seeing his team-mate win in Spain.

"Part of me is happy that the team is winning again and everyone is super motivated and confidence is high. Obviously that's a positive that I am trying to draw myself to, but from a personal side it was massively frustrating.

"It's a tough one - sure it's a team sport but you know you are doing it for yourself as well. It's as much an individual sport as it is a team sport and that balance is always a tricky one to try and manage. Obviously from the personal side it is still a tough one to take."

Ricciardo sees Verstappen as a genuine threat, but is hoping the Dutch teenager will help him up his game.

"Max is a serious F1 driver and that's actually really good for me and good motivation. I said when I joined Red Bull and went up against Seb that I wanted to challenge myself against the best and now Max is the newest challenge for me and he's a big one. In a way it's good that he is having this success because if I can get on top of that it is only good for me and probably both of our careers."
