Brydon Carse has been told to work through his "issues" and "take time for a proper reset" as the investigations into his conduct on a night out in Derby continue.
Carse was stood down from England's Test squad after he was briefly arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly outside a bar while celebrating a win in the County Championship with his Durham team-mates. Derbyshire Police have since confirmed that they are investigating an assault connected to the incident, though Carse's involvement or otherwise remains unclear.
Carse is also the subject of a Cricket Regulator investigation into his actions, and was this week left out of England's squads for both the third Test against Pakistan and their upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. The ECB clarified on Friday that he was available for selection against Sri Lanka, but has been left out and encouraged to "work through" his off-field behaviour.
"Whilst Brydon was available for selection, he has not been picked for the Sri Lanka series squad," an ECB spokesperson told Cricinfo. "Given recent events, we feel it is important for him to work through the issues that led to the Derby incident and take time for a proper reset. This decision does not prejudge the outcome of any investigation."
Carse was previously disciplined for his off-field conduct in 2024, when he was banned for three months (with a longer ban suspended) due to historical breaches of ECB betting rules. He has since become an England regular across formats, and was their leading wicket-taker in last winter's Ashes series in Australia.
Joe Root, England's Test captain, said before the second Test at Lord's that he was "really hacked off" that his team-mates continued to make "stupid mistakes" off the field, and that he saw the latest incident as the catalyst for a cultural reset. Root said that Carse was "upset" and "apologetic" about his actions, but he now appears to be facing a spell out of the squad.
