Pakistan 349 for 6 (Rizwan 59, Agha 55*, Mehidy 3-94, Taskin 2-70) trail Bangladesh 413 by 64 runs
Pakistan recovered from their batting collapse in the first session to finish the second on 349 for 6 against Bangladesh. Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha added 119 runs for the sixth wicket to help the visitors recover after they went from 210 for 1 at one stage to 230 for 5. As a result, Pakistan are just 64 runs behind Bangladesh.
Rizwan fell off what turned out to be the last ball before tea, holing out to Taijul Islam at mid-off, where Mahmudul Hasan Joy tracked back to take the catch. Rizwan made 59 with eight fours, while Salman remained unbeaten on 55. As soon as the players were walking off for the break, the groundstaff brought on the covers as there was light rain falling at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
Pakistan would be the happier of the two camps as they went through the entire second session conceding only one wicket while adding 98 runs. Rizwan dominated the proceedings with boundaries off Ebadot Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Salman struck Taijul for two fours, before lofting Mehidy for a six over long-off.
Both batters reached their half-centuries, before Rizwan fell trying to force Taijul in the last over before tea.
Earlier, in the first session, Mehidy and Taskin Ahmed had combined to take four quick wickets to spark Pakistan's batting collapse. Azan Awais reached his maiden ton early in the session before edging Taskin to first slip, where Najmul Hossain Shanto took a simple catch, and becoming Taskin's 50th Test wicket. Awais had become the 14th Pakistan batter to score a century on Test debut.
Awais' 104-run stand with fellow debutant Abdullah Fazal was only the third time that two debutants had a century stand for Pakistan.
Fazal was going well at the other end, reaching his fifty before hitting Mehidy for a straight six. But trouble lurked for Pakistan. Shadman Islam held a sharp catch at point when Shan Masood drilled Taskin with an uppish square cut.
Saud Shakeel fell lbw to Mehidy for a duck, before Fazal drove the offspinner straight to mid-on, where Taijul Islam completed the catch. Pakistan could have been in further trouble but Taijul had overstepped when he had Salman caught behind without scoring.
