Mehidy five-for hands Bangladesh slim lead after Agha, Rizwan fight back

Mehidy Hasan Miraz got 5 for 102 BCB

Bangladesh 413 lead Pakistan 386 (Awais 103, Fazal 60, Mehidy 5-102, Taijul 2-46) by 27 runs

Mehidy Hasan Miraz's five-wicket haul hastened the end of the Pakistan innings as the visitors were bowled out for 386 after losing 4 for 37. They finished just 27 runs behind Bangladesh, who were bowled out for 413 on the second afternoon. Pakistan's innings was propped up by Azan Awais' century on debut, and fifties from Abdullah Fazal, Salman Agha and Mohammad Rizwan.

After the rain break, when play started at 4.15pm local time, Nahid Rana removed Agha for 58, having him caught in the covers. Mehidy then got Noman Ali and Shaheen Afridi for 2 and 13, respectively. The innings ended when Taijul Islam clean bowled Hasan Ali, with roughly 15 overs remaining on the third day.

Pakistan had started the day on a positive note when Awais reached his maiden Test hundred. He struck two fours, after which he took a single off Nahid to reach the three-figure mark. Awais became the 14th Pakistan batter to reach a century on debut. Azan was prompt on anything too short or full during his 165-ball stay, hitting 14 fours - seven each on both the off and on side.

When Taskin Ahmed dismissed Awais shortly afterwards, it was his 50th Test wicket. Taskin opened the floodgates at that point, as Pakistan lost four wickets for just 20 runs. Shadman Islam took a sharp catch to send Pakistan captain Shan Masood back for 9, before Saud Shakeel fell lbw to Mehidy for a duck. Mehidy also got Abdullah Fazal to give a catch to mid-on after the debutant made 60.

Fazal struck seven fours and a six in his 120-ball knock, but his dismissal left Pakistan in a precarious state in the morning session. Bangladesh could have had one more wicket before lunch when Taskin had Agha caught behind on no score, only for him to have overstepped.

Pakistan, however, turned things around after lunch when Rizwan and Salman added 119 runs for the sixth wicket. Both batters reached their half-century within a few overs of each other, as Pakistan steadily chipped away at Bangladesh's total.

Rizwan, though, fell towards the end of the second session when he couldn't clear mid-off against Taijul. Rizwan made 59 from eight boundaries, immediately after which the rain arrived and stopped play for two hours.
