Indian women's archery medal hopes ended on Thursday as both Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari lost their respective pre-quarterfinals in Rio. While Bombayla was beaten 6-2 by Alejandra Valencia of Mexico, Deepika failed to take a set off second-ranked Tan Ya-Ting of Chinese Taipei, losing 6-0.
Bombayla came under pressure by firing a 7 in her first shot of the first set, which Valencia went on to win 28-26 with some consistent scoring.
In the next set, Bombayla's second shot was an 8. Valencia responded with a second shot of 7, allowing the Indian to close out the set 26-23.
Bombayla began the third set with 10, which led to a similar response from Valencia. The 21-year-old Mexican benefitted from an erratic third shot from Bombayla to take the third set 28-27.
Needing a set to bring herself back into reckoning, Bombayla fired 6 -- her poorest score of the match -- to begin the fourth set, but there was no let-up from Valencia, as she won the fourth set 25-23.
Earlier, Deepika Kumari failed to become the first Indian to enter the quarterfinals in Olympics archery, in the face of some consistent archery from her higher-ranked opponent.
Tan shot a sequence of a 10 and two 9s to take the opening set 28-27 as Deepika could only respond with 9,8 and 10.
The second set began with Deepika firing an 8, to which Tan responded with 9. Under pressure, the Indian archer responded with 9 and 9, while Tan shot two 10s in response to take the second set 29-26.
The third set featured three 9s from Deepika, while Tan responded with three 10s. The scoreline was 30-27 in favour of the victor.
India's only archer remaining in contention is Atanu Das in the men's individual event. He will be in action at 5.43pm (IST) on Friday.
