Ask Steven: How many golfers have won three majors in the same year?

I know that no golfer has ever won all four majors in the same year. How many have won three? asked Michael Franklin

Only two men have managed to win three of the four majors in the same year, a feat that became possible when the Masters was founded in 1934. In 1953 Ben Hogan won the Masters and the US and British Opens; he couldn't take part in the PGA as it was played at almost the same time as the Open at Carnoustie, which he won by four strokes (it was the only time he played in it).

Tiger Woods won the US and British Opens and the PGA in 2000; Vijay Singh had earlier won the Masters. But Tiger did win at Augusta in 2001, to become the only man ever to hold all four major titles at the same time.

It's pretty rare even to win two majors in the same year. This has been achieved only 29 times in all, most recently by Jordan Spieth in 2015, Rory McIlroy in 2014 and Padraig Harrington in 2008. Jack Nicklaus did it on five occasions, and Tiger Woods three.

Babe Zaharias (1950), Mickey Wright (1961), Pat Bradley (1986) and Inbee Park (2013) all won three women's majors in the same year.
