Slot: We need an exceptional performance vs. PSG (1:14)

Arne Slot admits Liverpool will need to be at their absolute best to turn things around vs. PSG at Anfield. (1:14)

Liverpool were unable to produce another stirring Anfield comeback on Tuesday as Paris Saint-Germain outclassed Arne Slot's men to win 2-0 on the night, and 4-0 on aggregate, to book their spot in the Champions League semifinals.

Goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the first leg had the holders in a commanding position heading into the match on Merseyside and a double from Ousmane Dembélé gave the reigning European champions a deserved victory.

Slot's surprise 3-5-2 formation at the Parc des Princes was designed primarily for damage limitation, but it misfired as the holders repeatedly cut through the Liverpool defence, creating a host of opportunities that should have seen them hold more than a two-goal advantage at the end of the teams' first meeting.

Despite Liverpool failing to register a shot on target during the game, Mohamed Salah stayed rooted to his spot on the substitutes' bench.

Liverpool, though, had a history of staging epic comebacks in Europe in front of their own fans and hopes remained that they could turn it around. But PSG were just too good over the two matches and look to be hitting top form at just the right time.

To add to Slot's worries, Hugo Ekitike went off in the first half with a worrying-looking injury to his achilles that could put the rest of his season, and any hopes of a spot in France's World Cup squad, in serious jeopardy.
