The FIA has announced that Jules Bianchi's race number - No.17 - will be retired from the F1 world championship in honour of the Frenchman.

Bianchi died on Friday night from head injuries he sustained at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix and, out of respect, the FIA announced that his race number will not be used again in F1.

"Jean Todt, President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) announced that the car number 17 will be retired from the FIA Formula One World Championship in honour of Jules Bianchi," read an FIA statement. "As F1 car numbers are now personally chosen by each driver, the FIA believes it to be an appropriate gesture to retire Jules Bianchi's number 17.

"As a result, this number can no longer be used for a car competing in the FIA Formula One World Championship."

Since 2014 drivers have picked their own personal number that they carry with them throughout their F1 career. Bianchi took No.17 after his original choices of 7, 27 and 77 were taken by Kimi Raikkonen, Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas respectively, who were all given preference as they finished higher up the standings in 2013.
