Fernando Alonso says he welcomes the list of reliability issues suffered by McLaren this year because his focus is on making 2016 a competitive campaign for the team.
Alonso is yet to score a point since leaving Ferrari for McLaren this season, with a top-ten finish in Monte Carlo denied by overheating issues. The Spaniard has stressed on numerous occasions that he moved to McLaren knowing there would be a slow period of adjustment with Honda power and because he thinks it offers a better chance of winning a third world championship over the next few seasons.
Despite complaining McLaren was "too fragile" and suffering too many issues during the Monaco weekend, Alonso is happy to endure if it leads to better things next year.
Asked if reliability was a concern, the 2005 and 2006 world champion replied: "It is, but you know this year it is not anymore important for me, to finish 14th in the championship or 11th doesn't really change my life. I'm not frustrated, I want to be world champion and this year is not possible.
"Why not put all my focus on next year? All the issues we have this year is good news because it means not to repeat next year. This is a test year for us, it's not a winter test, it's a full year test for us. We will try to go through 2015 with maximum learning because all my focus is for 2016."
With the focus shifting back to power at the Canadian Grand Prix Alonso is keen to see whether McLaren can build on its top ten pace in Monte Carlo.
"Hopefully we keep improving the car. You know sometimes big things coming in and sometimes are small on the background. Now it seems more both cars are competitive and we are in the top 10 in a race like Monaco. Canada will be a good test for us to see more normal tracks where we are."
