ESPN, ABC collect total of 10 Emmys

NEW YORK -- ESPN came away with seven Sports Emmys, including three for "SportsCenter," and its "Sunday Night Football" won for outstanding live sports series at the awards ceremony Monday night.

The Dick Schaap Outstanding Writing Award went to ESPN for "Where is Wimbledon," written by Jeff Sarokin.

ABC won three Emmys, including outstanding graphic design for the Super Bowl.

"Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" won two of HBO's eight Emmys, more than any other network. "Real Sports" took the sports journalism award and was cited for a feature story on Alex Zanardi.

HBO also won two Emmys for its documentary on the Boston Red Sox, "The Curse of the Bambino." The number of Emmys tied a high for HBO, set in 1999.

Bob Costas of HBO and NBC won as best studio host. Cris Collinsworth of HBO won best studio analyst for his work on "Inside the NFL."

Fox's Joe Buck was selected outstanding play-by-play announcer
for the third time in four years, and John Madden of ABC's "Monday
Night Football" won as top event analyst. It's Madden's 14th Emmy.

Fox's coverage of the 2003 baseball postseason was honored for
outstanding live sports special. Fox won two Emmys this year; it
led the way with 11 last year.

NBC won five, three for its coverage of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. CBS won one Emmy for live event turnaround for its coverage of the Tour de France.

Judging was done by panels of peers in 26 categories.
