Lebron, Fay lead Alabama to win over St. John's
Justin Lebron went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and starter Tyler Fay was dominant, guiding Alabama to an 8-0 victory over St. John's on Saturday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in the opening game of the NCAA Tuscaloosa Super Regional.
Fay pitched 7⅓ scoreless innings for the Crimson Tide (41-19), allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out nine. The offense provided plenty of support, with Brennan Holt delivering a two-run double in the second inning to open the scoring. Holt finished 2-for-4. Bryce Fowler also drove in two runs with a double, while Eric Hines collected two hits, including a double. Brady Neal and Peyton Steele each added an RBI.
Alabama broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. A bases-loaded walk by Steele made it 3-0 before Fowler's two-run double extended the lead. Neal followed with another bases-loaded walk to push the score to 6-0. Lebron capped the scoring in the eighth with a two-run double to deep right-center.
Ashton Crowther relieved Fay and pitched 1⅔ scoreless innings to close the game, allowing no hits and one walk.
The Red Storm (36-25) managed just two hits. Adam Agresti recorded a double and Will Cowan had a single. St. John's loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh, but Fay escaped the jam with a flyout, a strikeout and a popout to preserve the shutout.
St. John's starter Liam O'Leary lasted 3⅓ innings, surrendering six runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
