Hammond, Tilghman spur Monmouth past Marist 91-78
UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Deion Hammond and Austin Tilghman tossed in 24 points apiece and Tilghman added 12 rebounds to propel Monmouth to a 91-78 victory over Marist on Saturday.
Hammond buried 5 of 9 from 3-point range to help the Hawks (7-13, 3-5 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) shoot 48 percent from beyond the arc. Tilghman didn't miss in 11 trips to the free-throw line on his way to his third double-double of the season. Ray Salnave had 15 points and Micah Seaborn 10 as Monmouth earned back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Brian Parker led the Red Foxes (4-17, 2-7) with 24 points, Aleksandar Dozic scored 18 and Austin Williams tallied 13 points and seven boards. Marist has lost four straight and seven of its last eight.
Marist trailed 40-30 at halftime after shooting just 33 percent but took a 64-62 lead on two Dozic free throws with 6:19 left. Tilghman hit a jumper to tie and two free throws to give the Hawks a 66-64 lead. Monmouth pulled away when Hammond and Tilghman hit 3s on four straight trips down the floor.
