Pipkins scores 25, UMass holds off Dayton 62-60
DAYTON, Ohio -- Luwane Pipkins scored 25 points, Carl Pierre added 15 and Massachusetts beat Dayton 62-60 on Saturday.
UMass made it a game with a 14-2 run -- with seven points from Pierre -- spanning halftime. The Minutemen trailed 30-20 with 3:21 left in the first half and Dayton didn't get on the board in the second until the 17:31 mark.
Malik Hines capped a 6-0 UMass run with back-to-back baskets for a 58-50 lead with 6:18 to go. But Dayton's Josh Cunningham scored the next six points to pull within two points with 3:48 to go.
UMass' Unique McLean and Pipkins made the only two field goals the rest of the way. Darrell Davis scored Dayton's final four points at the line and his contested driving layup at the buzzer bounced off the backboard and rim.
Chris Baldwin chipped in 10 points for UMass (8-8, 1-2 Atlantic 10), which had lost three of its last four.
Jalen Crutcher led Dayton (7-8, 1-2) with 14 points. Cunningham had 12 points and nine rebounds, Xeyrius Williams scored 11, and Jordan Davis and Darrell Davis added 10 apiece. Williams made all three of his 3-point attempts and the Flyers were 9 of 24.
