Commentary
Ipswich Town make a winning return to the Premier League, beating Sunderland 2-1 at Portman Road! The first half was highly entertaining, and it was the hosts who struck first – a mazy, weaving run from the returning Enciso opened the door for summer signing Emersonn to roll home his first goal for the club. Sunderland responded fantastically, and with a goal worth talking about again: Angulo bending in a wonderful free‑kick to restore parity. After the restart, aside from a couple of early half‑chances, the contest never truly sparked back into life. That was until Clarke – off the bench to face his former club – bent in a cute right‑footed finish into the bottom corner right on 90 minutes. It was too late for the Black Cats to respond, and in truth they never threatened enough, finishing with an xG of just 0.76 to the Tractor Boys’ 1.74. Gary O'Neil’s side follow Hull as another promoted team making a winning start, and they go again at Old Trafford against Manchester United next time out. Regis Le Bris’ men will look to respond at home against Fulham next Sunday. That’s all from us here – thanks for joining, and goodbye!
FULL-TIME: IPSWICH TOWN 2-1 SUNDERLAND
Clarke has another go, this time from miles out as he spots Roefs off his line. He tries to whip a right‑footer towards the left‑hand post, but it’s dragged wide. Sunderland waste no time getting back on the ball, pushing forward again in search of a late, late equaliser.
We’re into four minutes of added time, but you sense we’ll drift beyond that after the late drama here at Portman Road.
Lukic is credited with the assist, but the plaudits belong to Clarke – he’s surely just scored the winner against his former club!

GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! IPSWICH HAVE SURELY WON IT! Of all people, it’s the former Black Cat, Clarke, who may have just snatched all three points for the hosts. Alderete’s loose pass is seized upon, worked sharply to the winger on the near side – and the Englishman uses Ballard superbly as a reference point, bending the ball around him and into the bottom‑right corner. It nestles there beautifully, and Portman Road erupts into delirium. It's 2-1 Ipswich!
