Jocelyn Briski throws 1-hitter as Alabama beats LSU 7-0 in super regional opener
Jocelyn Briski threw a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead host Alabama to a 7-0 victory over LSU on Friday at Rhoads Stadium in the opener of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional.
Briski was nearly untouchable, allowing only a leadoff double in the first inning and walking none. The Alabama (53-7) offense provided plenty of support, led by Jena Young, who went 2-for-4 with a bases-clearing double and three RBIs. Alexis Pupillo added a solo home run, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI. Marlie Giles and Kristen White also contributed multihit games, each going 2-for-3 as the Crimson Tide collected 10 hits.
Jalia Lassiter ripped a double to left-center in the top of the first for LSU (40-18). However, Briski stranded her by striking out Alix Franklin to end the threat.
Alabama opened the scoring in the bottom of the inning. After a single by Young and a double by Pupillo, Young scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, Audrey Vandagriff delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0. Pupillo launched her solo home run to right in the bottom of the third, pushing the score to 3-0.
The Crimson Tide broke the game open in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Young drove a double to deep left-center, clearing the bases and giving Alabama a commanding 6-0 advantage. The final run came in the fifth when Kinley Pate scored from second on a wild pitch and throwing error.
LSU starting pitcher Paytn Monticelli worked 3⅓ innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits while striking out one. Cece Cellura pitched 2⅔ innings in relief, giving up an unearned run on three hits.
Up next: Alabama will be the visiting team when the two meet again at Rhoads Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
