UT Rio Grande pulls away from Texas A&M Commerce 91-84
EDINBURG, Texas -- Greg Bowie II scored a career-high 19 points and Terry Winn added 18 to lead Texas Rio Grande Valley to a season-opening 91-84 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday night.
A&M-Commerce, down 13 points at halftime, trailed 57-38 in the second half before scoring eight straight to spark a 28-10 run to pull within 67-66. Lesley Varner II, who had 16 points, made three free throws to stem the charge but A&M-Commerce got it back to within one two more times.
It was 80-78 when Winn made two baskets and two free throws during an 11-6 run to close the game.
Reggie Reid led the Division II Lions with 23 points and nine rebounds. Willie Rooks added 20 points.
The Vaqueros scored 28 points off 20 Lions' turnovers and had a 10-point advantage on points in the paint.
