UMBC leads throughout to beat Binghamton 78-68
VESTAL, N.Y. -- Joe Sherburne had 24 points and K.J. Maura added 16 while dishing out six assists as Maryland-Baltimore County led throughout and beat Binghamton 78-68 on Thursday night to claim sole possession of second place in the America East standings.
Arkel Lamar added 13 points and Jairus Lyles had 11 for UMBC.
The Retrievers (17-9, 8-3) had their three-game win streak halted Saturday when conference leader Vermont rolled over them, 81-53.
UMBC jumped to an early lead and held a 41-28 advantage at the break. Binghamton's Albert Odero started the second half with a 3-point play as the Bearcats closed to 48-41 when J.C. Show nailed a 3-pointer with 14:12 remaining. Lamar responded with a dunk to start a 7-1 run as UMBC pulled ahead 55-42.
Show had 23 points, Odero added 14 and Thomas Bruce had his eighth double double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds for Binghamton (10-16, 1-10), which has lost seven straight.
