Hornbeak scores 25, Monmouth ends season on 16 straight wins
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Je'lon Hornbeak scored 25 points and Monmouth edged Iona 79-73 on Sunday to close the regular season with 16 straight wins and the top seed into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Association Tournament.
Hornbeak had five of Monmouth's nine 3-pointers and the Hawks (26-5, 18-2) shot 47 percent from the floor (24 of 51). Justin Robinson added 16 points and Austin Tilghman 10 with nine rebounds.
Deyshonee Much led Iona (19-12, 12-8) with 18 points and Jordan Washington added 16. The Gaels are third-seeded in the MAAC tourney.
Josh James hit a 3-pointer that broke a 61-61 tie with 5:35 to play and then stole the ball and raced for a layup, scoring five quick points as Monmouth edged away to the win. Iona came as close as 66-64 but Robinson made two free throws and James made another layup after a Hornbeak steal.
