UNAM v Ind. del Valle
Independiente del Valle upset Pumas to advance to Copa Libertadores semis
Independiente del Valle have guaranteed their spot in the Copa Libertadores semis after defeating Pumas UNAM on penalties in Tuesday's quarterfinal second leg.
The unfancied Ecuadorian side lost 2-1 at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario but with the aggregate result tied at 3-3 the match went to penalties.
Pumas appeared to be cruising in the first half, with a three-minute brace from Ismael Sosa putting the hosts well in control.
The contest then looked to be over in the 56th minute when Los Negriazules defender Luis Ayala was shown a straight red card for a late foul.
Junior Sornoza, however, brought the visitors back into the tie with a brilliant free kick on 66 minutes, before Arturo Mina slotted the decisive penalty in the 5-3 shootout triumph.
