Teenager Karl propels Bayern Munich to win at Atlético Madrid
Bayern Munich stated their Champions League credentials with a hard-fought 2-0 win at Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.
Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer struck in the second half as the German giants wore down their stubborn hosts at the Metropolitano.
Karl, 18, broke the deadlock when he pounced on a mistake after 54 minutes. With the goal, Karl became just the fourth player to reach five Champions League goals before turning 19, after Lamine Yamal (11), Kylian Mbappé (10) and Raúl González (six).
Laimer made victory certain with a stunning finish 20 minutes later after being played in by a brilliant Harry Kane pass.
It was an impressive display by Bayern, who were again overseen by assistant boss Aaron Danks with manager Vincent Kompany still absent on medical grounds.
They also went into the game without a number of players through injury, with Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz among the absentees.
