London City Lionesses survive late Everton rally to stay in touch at top of WSL

London City Lionesses kept themselves in touch at the top of the Women's Super League with a 2-1 win over Everton at the Copperjax Community Stadium.

First-half goals from Delphine Cascarino and England winger Freya Godfrey had seemingly put the Lionesses in control.

Everton, though, set up a tense finish after substitute Holly McNamara headed in with 20 minutes left.

The Lionesses -- who had thrashed Tottenham 6-1 ahead of the international break -- took the lead in the 24th minute when Cascarino curled her shot into the right corner in after Daniëlle van de Donk had kept the ball alive with a deft backheel.

The hosts soon doubled their advantage in the 35th minute through Godfrey, who had made her senior England debut in the second leg of the World Cup qualifier play-off against Greece on Tuesday night.

After Everton had been caught in possession, the Lionesses broke quickly towards the edge of the penalty area, where Godfrey turned to clip a low finish across goal and into the far corner.

The Toffees regrouped for the second half and got a goal back with 20 minutes left.

Aurora Galli played the ball wide for McNamara and her cross was nodded in by Cain.
