Giuliano Simeone salvages a point for 10-man Atlético Madrid against Villareal

Giuliano Simeone salvaged a point for 10-man Atlético Madrid as they drew 2-2 with Villarreal at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.

A chaotic second half saw Marc Pubill put Atlético ahead and Gerard Moreno quickly level from the spot before the hosts were reduced to 10 men.

Robin Le Normand was dismissed in the 76th minute for fouling Georges Mikautadze in the area and the Villarreal striker scored the subsequent penalty, but Simeone snatched a point for Atlético late on.

Luiz Júnior was called into action to push away Alejandro Grimaldo's awkward curling effort as Atlético looked to strike early.

Nicolas Pépé had a strike blocked for the visitors, but Atlético continued to apply pressure as Junior saved Rodrigo Mendoza's attempt.

Jan Oblak was forced to stop Ayoze Perez's effort just before half-time and the goalkeeper was called into action again after the restart to tip away Pepe's strike.

Atlético opened the scoring in the 59th minute when the ball reached Pubill on the edge of the area and the full-back hit a curling strike into the top corner.

Their lead was short-lived as Morten Hjulmand conceded a penalty and Moreno stepped up to the spot, firing into the bottom corner to level.

Atlético were handed a blow when Le Normand was shown a red card following a VAR intervention and Mikautadze converted from the spot in the 78th minute.

However, a late Atlético break saw the ball slipped through to Simeone by Álex Baena and the midfielder equalised with a low finish in the 85th minute.
