Kylian Mbappé missed a stoppage-time penalty as Real Madrid suffered their first defeat since the return of coach José Mourinho, with a 1-0 loss at Real Betis on Friday.

The France star looked set to give Madrid a share of the points when he stepped up in the fourth minute of added time after Vinícius Júnior earned a penalty when he was cut down in the box. But Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles smothered Mbappé's spot kick, adding to his great performance on the night.

Betis stunned Madrid in the 81st minute when newcomer Troy Parrott, an Irish striker, knocked in a ball that Thibaut Courtois did well to save from a header by a Betis teammate.

Madrid also had a potential equalizer ruled out when Carlos Espí's acrobatic finish was denied by a VAR review for offside.

It's the first time that Madrid have lost one of their first four leagues games since the 2015-15 season.

After two trophy-less seasons, Madrid had begun the new campaign with three straight wins following the return of Mourinho, 13 years after his previous spell as coach ended.

Barcelona will now have the chance to create an early three-point lead over their rivals when they visit Valencia on Sunday.

Real Madrid had plenty of chances to have extended their perfect start on Friday.

Vinícius clipped a post and Mbappé squandered two big chances before the break, firing his first into Natan before Marc Bartra justified his inclusion with a big block, and it remained level after the break after Valles denied Jude Bellingham.

Mbappé directed a shot just wide moments after the restart and the intensity remained high as both sides looked for a breakthrough.

It finally came with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest after Nelson Deossa stung Courtois' palms with a header, which the goalkeeper could not hold.

The ball fell favorably into the path of Parrott, who turned home for a memorable first goal for the club since his summer move from AZ Alkmaar.

Mbappé came inches away from an equalizer, with a powerful drive cannoning off the crossbar with five minutes remaining and freshly-introduced substitute Espí thought he had done it when he flicked acrobatically past Valles.

But the goal was chalked off after review, and Real Madrid were still in search of a goal and running out of time when Courtois denied Deossa.

The opportunity came when Natan brought down Vinícius and the referee pointed to the spot, but the penalty was taken too softly and the diving Valles was able to save. It snapped a streak of seven consecutive penalty conversions for Mbappé in all competitions for Real Madrid.

The visitors wanted it to be retaken, arguing Marc Bartra had encroached, but the officials disagreed as Betis took all three points.
