Greece stun Germany in Nations League to hand Jürgen Klopp first defeat at the helm
Jürgen Klopp's homecoming fell flat as his first home match in charge of Germany ended with a surprise 1-0 defeat by Greece in Augsburg.
Substitute Dimitrios Kourbelis' deflected 74th-minute strike -- Greece's only shot on target -- proved the difference to leave Germany with just one point from their first two Nations League fixtures.
Klopp started his return to management with a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands on Thursday -- denied a winning start when his former Liverpool player Cody Gakpo scored a late leveller for the Oranje.
He made five changes to his line up but while they had 75% possession, they struggled to break down a well-organised Greek defence, with many of their 16 shots at goal attempts from distance.
One of Klopp's changes from the clash against the Dutch was handing a debut to Hoffenheim winger Bambasé Conté, who had Germany's first sight at goal when shooting wide from outside the box.
While Germany were largely on top in the opening stages, it was Greece's teenage winger Konstantinos Karetsas who came closest early on as he cut inside and curled just over the crossbar.
Karim Adeyemi had chances either side of the half hour, first cutting past Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas and firing over while off-balance before then forcing a save out of Konstantinos Tzolakis.
Germany continued to be on the front foot after half-time and captain Joshua Kimmich drew a fantastic save out of Tzolakis, who tipped over a free-kick destined for the top corner.
Felix Nmecha shot wide when Kevin Schade was arguably better placed to shoot before Klopp finally looked to his bench after 65 minutes, bringing on Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt.
Germany, though, were given a let-off midway through the second half when Kimmich was dispossessed in his own half before Vangelis Pavlidis was teed up for a one-on-one chance which he put wide.
It was a warning the hosts failed to heed as Greece took a surprise lead 16 minutes from time.
Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis drifted past Josha Vagnoman down Germany's right and cut back to Kourbelis, who feinted past Nmecha before drilling low, with the ball ricocheting off Kimmich before going in.
Klopp brought on Serge Gnabry, Anton Stach and Hennes Behrens in the final quarter of an hour in a bid to force Germany's way back into the match.
While Gnabry brought plenty of energy, Fotis Ioannidis almost made it 2-0 late on as his effort whistled past the left-hand post, with Germany unable to mount anything meaningful in added-on time.
