Commentary
Arsenal make a winning start to their Premier League title defence, courtesy of a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City. It was very routine for the Gunners, who outperformed their 1.8 xG on the way to giving the Sky Blues a harsh reality check. Arteta's side broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, pouncing on sloppy play by Van Ewijk with Calafiori quickly finding Havertz, who neatly steered a first-time shot into the far corner. It was 2-0 just eight minutes later when new signing Tzolis' cross was parried by Rushworth, and Saka rolled into an empty net from close range. The third goal, which ultimately killed the contest, came just four minutes into the second half. Saka and White combined to tee up Odegaard, whose untidy strike bounced in past a wrong-footed Rushworth. Coventry had positive spells, but their 0.28 xG represents a severe lacking of a cutting edge in the final third - something they will need to improve quickly as they settle back into life in the top flight. Lampard's side will look to build some momentum when they face Plymouth Argyle in round two of the EFL Cup on Tuesday, before hosting fellow promoted side Hull City next Saturday in their first Premier League home game at the Coventry Building Society Arena. As for Arsenal, they will look to make it two league wins from two in 10 days' time, when they travel to Birmingham to play Aston Villa - likely with former Villa defender Ezri Konsa in tow. That's all for today. Thank you for joining us for the first game of this new Premier League season. Until next time, goodbye!
FULL-TIME: ARSENAL 3-0 COVENTRY CITY
Arsenal are set to maintain their 100% record in opening Premier League matches as defending champions. One of their three previous such wins also came in a battle against the previous season's second-tier champions. Then, they defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1 at Highbury in August 1998.
In short: no, they can't. Torp's inswinging delivery is overhit and floats behind for a goal-kick. At the other end, as four additional minutes are indicated by the fourth official, Merino shoots from the edge of the box. His low drive is creeping into the bottom corner, so Rushworth has to get down to block it.
The Sky Blues have another chance to grab a late consolation, as they're awarded a free-kick when Mosquera bundles over Awoniyi. Torp is stood over the ball. Can they make the most of this opportunity...?
CHANCE FOR RUDONI! It's Coventry's most glaring opportunity of the entire match. The midfielder makes a late run into the box to meet Torp's inswinging cross. Under pressure from Hincapie, though, he can only send a tame header straight into Raya's grateful arms.
