Maurice Turner rushes for 200 yards and 2 TDs as Tulane survives Southern Miss 24-21
NEW ORLEANS -- — Maurice Turner rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns, including a 74-yard go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, as Tulane rallied past Southern Miss 24-21 on Saturday.
Southern Miss (1-3) led 21-14 after Landry Lyddy threw his third touchdown pass early in the third quarter, a 22-yarder to Mario Sanders.
Cooper Helmke’s 26-yard field goal pulled Tulane (2-2) within 21-17 with 8:35 remaining before Turner broke free for a 74-yard touchdown run with 5:26 left to give the Green Wave the lead.
Southern Miss drove to the Tulane 3-yard line on its next possession, but TJ Smith blocked Creighton Wilbanks’ 21-yard field-goal attempt with 1:45 remaining to preserve the lead.
Turner also scored on a 43-yard run in the second quarter and averaged 16.7 yards on 12 carries. Tulane finished with 281 yards rushing.
Kadin Semonza threw for 129 yards and a touchdown for Tulane, including a 47-yard score to Anthony Brown-Stephens in the first quarter.
Lyddy completed 18 of 29 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Sanders caught four passes for 69 yards and two scores.
Tulane: Has a bye week before visiting Army on Oct. 10.
Southern Miss: At Troy on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
