Consolation win for Sheriff

FC Sheriff earned their first win of the Europa League group stage in Thursday's dead-rubber against Tromso.
With both sides already eliminated from Group K, just pride and third place were on the line in Tiraspol and it was the hosts who emerged with the points as first-half goals by Cadu and Ismail Isa secured a low-key 2-0 win.
Defeat for Norwegian minnows Tromso sees them finish bottom of the group with just one point from six games, while Sheriff finish two points behind Anzhi Makhachkala, who were well beaten by runaway group winners Tottenham in the night's other game.
The Moldovan hosts wasted little time asserting their authority over their visitors from the Arctic Circle, opening the scoring with just four minutes gone as Cadu headed in from close range from Henrique Luvannor's cross.
Tromso had no response after going behind and fell further adrift in the 36th minute when Benjamin Balima's cross came through to Isa and he had a simple task to tap the ball home six yards.
Tromso finally threatened in second half and were only denied a goal when Vjekoslav Tomic produced a brilliant save to keep out Adnan Causevic firm header from Thomas Drage's corner.
The hosts might have made the margin of victory more comfortable in the final minute when Isa rose to plant a header towards goal but the ball sailed just wide of the target.

                                        Anzhi into next round

Anzhi Makhachkala put their domestic troubles behind them as they advanced to the knockout stages of the Europa League thanks to a 1-1 draw against FC Sheriff.
The Russians have yet to win a game in the Premier League but the point earned on Thursday night ensured that they will finish second behind Tottenham in Group K.
Ismail Isa had put the Moldovans ahead following a smart move but Alexandru Epureanu equalised from a corner to ensure Anzhi's qualification.
Sheriff showed their intent to attack from the outset and produced a fine save from Anzhi goalkeeper Mihail Kerzhakov after just two minutes as he turned Cadu's shot around the post.
The home side came back at them and won a corner shortly after but Ewerton could only head wide as the Russians began to put their stamp on the game.
Vladimir Sobolev was next to try his luck and really should have done better as he fired an effort from 12 yards wide of Vjekoslav Tomic's left post.
Anzhi were having by far the better of it and Nikita Burmistrov curled a shot wide before Serder Serderov brought a save from Tomic as half-time approached.
Serderov then blazed over the bar but Sheriff showed they still posed a threat in stoppage-time when Kerzhakov was called upon to making a brilliant save from Ricardinho.
And it was the visitors who took the lead seven minutes after the break through Isa.
Benjamin Balima advanced down the right and produced a perfect cross for Isa who got in front of his marker and volleyed home off the far post.
The lead was to last just six minutes, though, as Epureanu brought a smart save from Tomic and then headed home from the resulting corner.
Anzhi were having some joy from set-pieces and should have gone ahead from further corners but IIya Maksimov saw his header blocked and Sobolev volleyed over the bar.
Isa threatened with another header for Sheriff but Anzhi always looked like they had another gear as they eased through.

#INSERT type:image caption:Jermain Defoe celebrates after becoming Tottenham's all-time top scorer in European competition. END# A first Tottenham goal for Erik Lamela and a record-breaking penalty from Jermain Defoe secured safe passage into the knockout rounds of the Europa League for Andre Villas-Boas' side as they finally broke down a spirited Sheriff side.

Fitch: Lamela finally lives up to the hype

The first half at White Hart Lane had seen little in the way of creativity from Spurs but they burst into life after an hour with new boy Lamela at the heart of their attacking prowess.
The 21-year-old has been used sparingly by Villas-Boas since his arrival from Roma and has yet to start a Barclays Premier League game for Spurs but he made the difference against the reigning Moldovan champions, who succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in north London.
Lamela put in one of his most assured performances in a Tottenham shirt and topped it off by tucking away the first goal of the game 15 minutes into the second half, before being tripped inside the box moments later to give Defoe a chance to make history from 12 yards.
The England striker converted the penalty to claim his 23rd European goal for the club, one more than Martin Chivers managed during his time at White Hart Lane.
But Spurs did not have everything their own way. For all of their defensive work Sheriff threatened twice in the first half before Ismail Isa grabbed a goal on 72 minutes to keep Tottenham on their toes.
Tottenham started the game brightly enough but Sheriff came with a blueprint copied from several other visiting teams in recent White Hart Lane fixtures and set out to frustrate their hosts.
Moussa Dembele had the first effort of the night after seven minutes as he rode a number of half-hearted challenges before firing in a low shot which Vjekoslav Tomic pushed behind for a corner.
Villas-Boas made eight changes from the goalless draw at Everton on Sunday and it was the returning Etienne Capoue who was next to try his luck but his similar attempt was off target.
Lamela, another player recalled for the game, had calls for a first penalty turned down after 20 minutes. The Argentina international was caught by Djibril Paye and, after originally looking to stay on his feet, tumbled over with referee Kenn Hansen unmoved.
For all of Tottenham's possession they were almost caught out in the 25th minute as Sheriff broke forward and Isa's shot deflected on to a post off the boot of Younes Kaboul.
Christian Eriksen's lapse in concentration almost gifted the visitors the lead shortly afterwards as he rolled the ball across his own penalty area and in to the path of Ricardinho, who arrowed a shot wide of Brad Friedel's right-hand post.
Spurs soon regained the upper hand as Lamela had two efforts blocked by brave Sheriff defending but it was turning in to a similar story for the home side as they failed to create any clear-cut chances.
The second half started where the first 45 minutes had left of as Sheriff looked to keep things tight at the back and limit the number of chances Tottenham's front players could create.
Friedel, who set the record for the oldest player to appear in this competition when he was named in the starting line-up, was forced in to making his first save of the evening as Luvannor Henrique curled a low effort which the 42-year-old dealt with comfortably.
Tomic in the Sheriff goal was forced in to a much smarter save just seconds later as Eriksen let fly from 25 yards with the Croatian goalkeeper tipping his shot over at full stretch.
But Spurs finally broke the Moldovan's resilience on the hour as Lamela struck a composed shot past Tomic after Eriksen's return ball had deflected in to his path.
Lamela was again heavily involved in Defoe's record-breaking goal as he was brought down inside the box with the 31-year-old thumping home the resulting penalty to move clear as Tottenham's leading goalscorer in European competition.
Sheriff were soon handed a lifeline as Friedel could only parry a shot from Cadu with Isa on hand to finish coolly and make it an uncomfortable final 20 minutes for the hosts as they conceded their first goal of this year's competition.
Any late charge towards Friedel's goal failed to materialise as Tottenham claimed their fourth win in four Group K matches and confirmed their place in the final-32 with two games remaining.
ends

Erik Lamela played it short to Christian Eriksen, whose cross was nodded into the top left-hand corner with impressive control by Vertonghen.

Silence fell upon Stadionul Sheriff after the ball rippled the back of the net, although the raucous home support, complete with loud hooters, soon found their voice again.

Henrique, the top scorer in the Molodovan league, broke free on goal and looked all but certain to score after rounding Hugo Lloris, only for Chiriches to remarkably clear off the line.

Kobi Moyal curled wide from outside the box as Sheriff continued to press, although that left them open to quick Spurs breaks.

Villas-Boas' side looked set to capitalise on that weakness when an Eriksen flick put Lennon through on goal, only for Vjekoslav Tomic to save the close-range drive with his legs.

A lack of match sharpness was perhaps to blame for the miss, which looked like it would prove costly when Cadu found the back of the net on the half-hour mark.

An impressive cutback from Henrique put through his fellow Brazilian to rifle home past Lloris, only for offside flag to see the goal chalked off - not that the home fans noticed, celebrating for a full 30 seconds afterwards.

The Moldovan champions were soon on the attack again, this time Isa breaking through and putting wide from an acute angle.

Not only were Tottenham having to deal with a clearly pumped-up home side but also a defensive re-jig, with Michael Dawson coming on for injured left-back Zeki Fryers after 34 minutes.

Perhaps that alteration was behind their sloppiness when dealing with a quickly-taken free-kick, which ended with the impressive Henrique swivelling on the edge of the box and striking just over.

Defoe also fired over as the half came to a close, with the England international firing straight at Tomic seven minutes after the restart.

Sheriff, though, were continuing to prove a threat, despite Tottenham dominating possession. Lloris had to react quickly to prevent a clear run on goal for Isa, who later looked for a penalty, writhing around in pain after a strong challenge by Sandro.

The Brazilian saw a long-ranger deflected behind at the other end and a threatening Eriksen cross was well dealt with by Tomic as Spurs looked to pull further ahead.

Lennon's switch to the right flank was causing the hosts problems and the returning winger saw a 20- yard effort strike the post in the 67th minute.

Dawson got in the way of a Ricardinho drive when Sheriff pushed again, before Defoe put the tie to bed. Collecting a ball from substitute Nacer Chadli, the England striker rifled home to level with Chivers.

Defoe wasted a chance to break the record soon after with what proved to be his last real chance, with Isa prodding wide late on for the hosts.
