El Duque encouraged after elbow tests

TAMPA, Fla. – New York Yankees right-hander Orlando Hernandez underwent a CT scan Monday on his ailing right elbow and team officials said the results were encouraging.

General manager Brian Cashman said the scan showed no changes from tests done last year.

"That is good news," Cashman said. "He is on anti-inflammation medication and hopefully will get positive results in a few days."

News of the test came after the Yankees' game Monday night against the Detroit Tigers was postponed because of rain. Manager Joe Torre said it was the possible the Yankees might add a game.

Hernandez has not pitched since March 9 when he left a game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after reporting stiffness in his forearm and elbow.

"I feel better," Hernandez said through an interpreter. "I'm not happy, but I'm not frustrated. It's bothering me."

Now Jeter's Mercedes banged up
TAMPA, Fla. – Derek Jeter sat in the trainer's room Monday at Legends Field, wearing a neck brace when Yankees GM Brian Cashman walked in.

"I was like, Oh my God!" Cashman said.

Turns out Jeter was playing a joke on teammate Orlando Hernandez, who rear-ended Jeter's Mercedes in the parking lot Sunday night.

Now Jeter's car matches its owner, who has been sidelined for much of this spring training with aches and pains.

Jeter said his car sustained significant damage from Hernandez's semitruck. Insurance will cover the repairs.

"I'll inflate it a little," Jeter joked.

Hernandez said he did not know if he would be ready for the start of the regular season.

"I feel pain and bothered, and as long as I have that I'm not going to be able to pitch," Hernandez said.

Hernandez tried throwing off a bullpen mound Sunday, but shut down the session after just five minutes. An examination by team doctors found that inflammation had not completely subsided.

The right-hander has previously had X-rays and an MRI. Hernandez was on the disabled list last season from July 14-Aug. 6 with discomfort in the same area.

"It was just another step in making sure that we've covered every base," Torre said. "We just did an MRI and said, what can we do next?"

The possibility Hernandez will not be ready for the start of the regular season could impact the Yankees starting rotation plans.

"Obviously, a week from today (Monday), we're going to have to have it figured out or at least have some kind of plan in place," Torre said. "We know we have three guys that are going to start, and if El Duque is not one of them, we'll have the first three games set. After that, we'll do what we can."

The Yankees are still undecided about their fifth starter. Should Hernandez be sidelined, that would open up a second spot.

The candidates for the open fifth spot include Christian Parker, Sid Fernandez, Adrian Hernandez and Dwight Gooden.

Mike Mussina, who was bruised on the inside of his left knee by a batted ball last Thursday, threw for 10 minutes off the mound and is scheduled to pitch Wednesday night against the Devil Rays.

Shortstop Derek Jeter (right quadriceps) had his scheduled batting practice session postponed by the rain. He is still expected to return by the end of the week.
