KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Carlos Delgado was not too tired to
terrorize the Kansas City Royals.
| | | Raul Mondesi, left, celebrates with Carlos Delgado after hitting a solo homer off Mac Suzuki in the first. | Delgado hit three home runs for the second time this season and
twice teamed with Raul Mondesi on back-to-back shots as the Toronto
Blue Jays beat the Royals 12-4 Friday night.
Delgado, who leads the American League with 10 home runs, has
three multihomer games this season and 25 in his career. The 10
home runs is a Blue Jays' record for April.
"I like this ballclub," Delgado said. "When we explode, we
can play with the best of them. Mondesi has got as much power as
anybody from the right side, but it's not just the two of us. We've
got guys behind us and in front of us doing the job."
The Blue Jays did not arrive at their Kansas City hotel until
nearly 5 a.m. after a 17-inning loss Thursday night to the New York
Yankees at Toronto.
"I feel tired after playing 17 innings, we don't feel it right
now because we're young," Mondesi said.
Delgado became the 14th player to have a pair of three-homer
games in the same season. Jeff Bagwell did it in 1999 for Houston,
while Geronimo Berroa was the last AL player to accomplish the
feat, in 1996 for Oakland.
Delgado joined Doug DeCinces (August 1982) as the only AL
players to have two three-homer games in the same month. Willie
Stargell and Johnny Mize did it in the NL.
Mondesi homered in the first and seventh innings, and Delgado
followed with a home run each time.
Delgado's third homer was a two-run shot in the ninth and gave
him four RBIs for the game.
"Carlos might be the best hitter in the game," Blue Jays
manager Buck Martinez said. "He is as smart a hitter that I've
ever been around."
Mondesi, who drove in five runs, hit a grand slam in the six-run
seventh off rookie reliever Kris Wilson, who failed to retire any
of the five batters he faced.
"I didn't make the pitches I needed and it cost us the game,"
Wilson said. "It put the game out of reach. It's pretty hard to
comeback from a six-run deficit the last two innings.
"I let them down, but I'll learn from this. I'm not the kind of
person to hand my head."
The Blue Jays, who moved into a first-place tie with Boston in
the AL East, batted around in the seventh, helped by a walk, hit
batter and an error by Wilson.
Mondesi and Delgado hit solo shots in the first inning off Mac
Suzuki (1-1), who left after six innings trailing 4-3.
Chris Carpenter (2-1), who lost to the Royals in his previous
start, scattered eight hits and allowed three runs over seven
innings.
Carlos Beltran homered just inside the right-field foul pole in
the fifth to tie it at 3 and extend the Royals' club record to 13
consecutive games with a homer.
Royals rookie Dee Brown snapped an 0-for-13 streak with three
hits and drove in three runs, both career highs.
The Royals, who are in last place in the AL Central, have lost
three straight and dropped 8 1/2 games behind first-place Minnesota.
Game notes Carlos Febles of the Royals was placed on the DL with a
ligament tear in his right knee and will be out a minimum of eight
weeks. Luis Alicea replaced Febles at second base and batted
leadoff. The Royals promoted RHP Cory Bailey, who has a 0.00 ERA
and a save in five relief appearances with Triple-A Omaha. ...
Royals DH Mark Quinn went 0-for-4 and walked to snap his career
high 14-game hitting streak.
