GAME LOG
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) One swing of Barry Bonds' potent bat gave Russ Ortiz an impressive victory and handed Jimmy Haynes a
hard-luck loss.

Bonds homered for the seventh time in eight games, and Ortiz
outdueled Haynes as the San Francisco Giants beat the Milwaukee
Brewers 3-1 Friday night.
Bonds' 502nd career homer came one night after his streak of six
consecutive games with a home run tied for the second-longest in
NL history ended against Los Angeles.
It was also the only difference between two phenomenal pitching
performances. Ortiz and Haynes allowed just three hits in their 15
combined innings.
The Giants finished with three hits and Milwaukee had two.
"I'm glad we won. Russ did a great job," Bonds said. "That's
a great performance, and he did it when we needed it the most.
Haynes pitched a great game too, but he made one mistake."
Bonds rocketed a two-run shot to left-center in the fourth
inning to move within two homers of Eddie Murray for 16th place on
the career list.
The homer was the only hit allowed in seven innings by Haynes
(1-2), who entered the game with a 9.64 ERA but retired the Giants'
lineup with ease.
"It was a good night probably the best night I've ever had,"
Haynes said. "But I made one bad pitch to Barry, and he made me
pay for it. He got it over the wall."
After losing to Milwaukee in his last start, Ortiz (3-1) held
the Brewers to two singles in eight innings, retiring 13 straight
batters after pitching out of a fourth-inning jam and striking out
eight.
"I just seemed to have control of all my pitches," Ortiz said.
"I'm concentrating pitch by pitch, not looking back at the last
inning, and not looking toward the next inning. It's amazing what
can happen if you just throw strikes and get ahead."
Ortiz was dominant until he was removed for a pinch-hitter in
the eighth. Still, it was the Giants' longest start this season.
"Russ smelled that victory, and he went after it," Giants
manager Dusty Baker said. "We're trying to teach him to close out
ballgames, but he didn't need to tonight."
Not with Robb Nen around. He threw 11 straight strikes for his
fifth save.
Shawon Dunston's pinch-hit RBI triple off reliever Ray King in
the eighth gave the Giants an insurance run. It was Dunston's first
extra-base hit since joining San Francisco in the offseason.
The Giants improved to 6-1 at Pacific Bell Park this season with
a win in the opener of a three-game series with Milwaukee, which
lost for the third time in four games while falling to 1-6 on the
road this season.
Neither Haynes nor Ortiz allowed a hit in the first three
innings, with Haynes retiring his first nine hitters and Ortiz
facing only nine batters.
Ortiz only lost his control in the fourth inning, when Tyler
Houston's single was the Brewers' first hit. Moments later, Richie
Sexson drove home the Brewers' only run with another single, but
Ortiz got Jose Hernandez to fly out with the bases loaded on a high
pitch.
"Swinging at that pitch was a stupid thing for me to do," said
Hernandez, who's 10-for-18 with Milwaukee with the bases loaded.
"I've got to take a pitch in that situation when we've finally got
a couple of guys on base."
Game notes At 2:19, the game was the shortest for both teams this
year. ... Steady rain pelted most of the Bay Area all day, but it
stopped in metropolitan San Francisco about two hours before the
game. The grounds crew dried out the infield, and the game started
on schedule. ... The Giants wore their new black alternate jerseys
at Pac Bell Park for the first time. They have received a mixed
reception among San Francisco baseball purists, both in the media
and in the public. ... Before the game, the Giants recalled
left-hander Chad Zerbe from Triple-A Fresno and optioned outfielder
Calvin Murray. ... Geoff Jenkins leaped face-first into the
outfield wall in an attempt to catch Bobby Estalella's
eighth-inning double. Jenkins wasn't injured. ... Rich Aurilia's
13-game hitting streak ended.
