OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Edgar Martinez has figured out Oakland's
pitching staff: He's 9-for-11 with eight walks against the
Athletics this season.

"Sometimes you see the ball so good you feel you can hit
anything," Martinez said after homering Tuesday night in the
Seattle Mariners' 5-1 win over the A's.
Martinez's solo shot in the third was his first homer of the
season.
"He's such a good hitter, he doesn't miss it when you make a
mistake," A's manager Art Howe said.
John Halama (1-1) allowed one run and four hits in 6 1/3
innings. He retired 10 straight batters at one stretch.
"I was pitching ahead tonight," he said. "It's a plus to get
ahead of those guys. I was locating in the zone and getting them to
hit groundballs."
Kazuhiro Sasaki got four outs for his fourth save.
"Halama was sharper than the last time," Mariners manager Lou
Pinella said. "He threw the ball well."
Seattle's outfield didn't get a putout until the fifth inning,
and only one through six innings.
"He must have had good movement because we swung at a lot of
borderline pitches," Howe said. "He got the groundballs when he
needed them."
Halama walked Jose Ortiz leading off the seventh and gave up a
one-out single to Olmedo Saenz.
Reliever Jeff Nelson walked Miguel Tejada, loading the bases,
then struck out Adam Piatt. Arthur Rhodes walked Terrence Long on a
full count, forcing in a run. Rhodes rebounded to strike out Eric
Chavez.
"We were one swing away from getting the lead," Howe said,
"but that sounds like a broken record right now. For whatever
reason we're not swinging the bats well."
Gil Heredia (0-2), who lost to the Mariners last week, gave up
two run and six hits in six innings.
"It's frustrating that it's early in the season and we can't
come up with victories," he said. "It's become a little
depressing in here."
After fouling off seven pitches with two strikes, Carlos Guillen
drew a two-out walk in the second. He later scored on David Bell's
single to put the Mariners up 1-0.
Martinez homered into the right-center field bleachers with one
out in the third. Ichiro Suzuki added an RBI single in the seventh.
Heredia induced double play grounders in each of the first three
innings to limit the damage.
Oakland's team batting average fell to .219 this season, second
worst to Baltimore (.170) in the majors.
"We're not able to move runners over or hit with runners in
scoring position," Oakland's Johnny Damon said. "The Mariners are
doing all the little things it takes to win right now."
Seattle added two runs in the ninth on Mike Cameron's sacrifice
fly and John Olerud's based-loaded walk against Jeff Tam.
