Taurasi medically cleared, must serve suspension

Diana Taurasi has been medically cleared to return to the Phoenix Mercury. Taurasi has been activated, but must first serve a one-game suspension Tuesday as the Mercury meet Las Vegas.

That is for her leaving the bench during an altercation Aug. 10 vs. Dallas. Taurasi's return to Phoenix's roster means that rookie Arica Carter has been released.

Taurasi has missed all but one game this season after back surgery. She returned July 12 for the Mercury's game at Connecticut, going 0-for-4 from the field, with five points on free throws and four assists. But she played just 16 minutes and said afterward she tried to return too early and needed more time.

Taurasi, the 2009 MVP, is in her 15th WNBA season and has averaged 19.8 points and 4.3 assists for her career. She is expected back on the court Sunday as Phoenix hosts Chicago. The Mercury are currently 13-13 and in seventh place in the WNBA.

Tuesday for their game with the Aces, they will get back center Brittney Griner, who was suspended three games for her part in the altercation with Dallas. Phoenix went 2-1 without Griner.
