Verry Elleegant streaks away to win Melbourne Cup at Flemington

Verry Elleegant has taken out the 2021 Melbourne Cup, exploding up the straight to upset short priced favourite Incentivise at Flemington.

Jockey James McDonald got a beautiful trip on the mare, before taking his mount clear 300 metres out from the winning post and powering away for a three-and-a-half length victory.

It was a maiden Melbourne Cup victory for both McDonald and champion trainer Chris Waller, who continues to add to his amazing legacy after a storied journey with Winx.

Tuesday's triumph also gave Verry Elleegant a 10th Group I win, adding to her Caulfield Cup triumph from 2020, and more than made up for her gallant third placed finish in the Cox Plate a fortnight ago.

"It means everything, and especially on this horse as well," McDonald said. "Over so many seasons now...and she's now a 10-time Group I winner.

"And it's just cemented her place right up the top of those real top horses, because what she's done over the years from seven furlongs now to 3200m is just incredible.

"And to win one of the biggest races in the land, it's just incredible."

Verry Elleegant had started from barrier 18, which had never previously supplied a winner of the Melbourne Cup throughout the race's long history, adding to the gravity of her performance and McDonald's brilliant ride.

Waller was overcome with emotion as he watched his star galloper cross the winning post from his Sydney home.

"When she crossed the line, I was very emotional," Waller said.

"I really wanted to be there to share it with the staff and those who have worked so hard, but to watch it with my family made it very, very special.

"It's going to take a while to sink in. At the moment it just sits as a moment to remember as a proud horse trainer.

"It's the Melbourne Cup, so it's very special and just the way she won it. She dropped on them and showed her class. She was the class of the race and she showed that with that finish that I'll never forget."
