Hislop: New interim manager, same old Manchester United (1:27)

Shaka Hislop says Man United were uninspiring vs. Villarreal and only won thanks to the heroics of Cristiano Ronaldo and David De Gea. (1:27)

With one round remaining in the Champions League group stage, it's all to play for to reach the knockout rounds -- or book a consolation place in the Europa League.

Here's the state of play across all eight groups, showing what each team needs to maintain hope of progressing.

Group winners and runners-up qualify for the Champions League round of 16, with third-placed teams dropping into the Europa League preliminary knockout round. Teams that finish bottom are eliminated from Europe.

QUALIFIED FOR UCL ROUND OF 16 (11/16): Ajax, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Man City, Paris Saint-Germain, Sporting CP

ELIMINATED FROM UCL (10/16): Besiktas, Malmo, RB Leipzig, Dynamo Kiev, Young Boys, Zenit St Petersburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, FC Sheriff, Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund

- When is the UCL RO16 draw?

GROUP A
Dec. 7: RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain vs. Club Brugge

Manchester City: Are through as group winners.

Paris Saint-Germain: Have qualified in second place.

RB Leipzig: Are out of the Champions League and must match or better Club Brugge's result on the final day to get into the Europa League -- so a win at home to Man City secures it.

Club Brugge: Must win better RB Leipzig's result to take third and continue in the Europa League.

GROUP B
Dec. 7: FC Porto vs. Atletico Madrid, AC Milan vs. Liverpool

Liverpool: Have qualified as group winners.

FC Porto: Will be through with a win at home to Atletico Madrid. A draw will also be enough if AC Milan fail to beat Liverpool.

AC Milan: Must win at home to Liverpool and hope FC Porto vs. Atletico is a draw OR Atletico Madrid must win by the same score margin or lower for Milan to go through. For instance, if both AC Milan and Atletico win by one goal, AC Milan will be second on goal difference.

If goal difference finishes level, second place would then be decided on group goals scored. So if AC Milan win 1-0 and Atletico Madrid win 3-1, Atleti are second on goals scored.

However, goal difference and goals scored could still finish level. If, for instance, AC Milan win 1-0 and Atletico Madrid win 2-0, both teams will have identical records and second place would be decided on away goals scored in all group matches (not head to head), which Atletico would win 4 goals to 3.

The tiebreakers cannot go any further than this point as Atleti have to take their total of away goals to at least 4 to level goal difference and goals scored, and AC Milan are at home.

AC Milan cannot qualify if FC Porto win.

Atletico Madrid: Must win at FC Porto, and that guarantees second place if AC Milan fail to beat Liverpool. If AC Milan do win, Atleti must win by a margin two goals greater to be sure of going through. If they win by a margin of one-goal greater, the above scenarios apply.

GROUP C
Dec. 7: Ajax vs. Sporting CP, Borussia Dortmund vs. Besiktas

Ajax: Have qualified as group winners.

Sporting CP: Are through as runners-up as they would win the head to head against Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund: Will drop into the Europa League.

Besiktas: Have been eliminated from Europe.

GROUP D
Dec. 7: Real Madrid vs. Inter, Shakhtar Donetsk vs. FC Sheriff

Real Madrid: Have qualified and need a point at home to Inter to win the group.

Inter Milan: Are also through but must win at the Bernabeu to take top spot.

FC Sheriff: Are out of the Champions League but guaranteed to drop into the Europa League.

Shakhtar Donetsk: Have been eliminated from Europe.

GROUP E
Dec. 8: Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona, Benfica vs. Dynamo Kiev

Bayern Munich: Have qualified for the round of 16 as group winners.

Barcelona: Must win away to Bayern to guarantee going through. Will also progress if Benfica fail to beat Dynamo.

Benfica: Have to win at home to Dynamo to have a chance of staying in, and will be through if Barcelona fail to beat Bayern. Benfica hold the head to head if level on points with Barca.

Dynamo Kiev: Have been eliminated from Europe.

GROUP F
Dec. 8: Atalanta vs. Villarreal, Manchester United vs. Young Boys

Manchester United: Have qualified for the round of 16 as group winners.

Villarreal: Must avoid defeat at Atalanta to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds, and are guaranteed at least a place in the Europa League.

Atalanta: Have to win at home to Villarreal to go through in the UCL, though a point would also earn a place in the Europa League.

Young Boys: Are out of the Champions League, but must win at Manchester United and hope Atalanta lose to take the place in the Europa League.

GROUP G
Dec. 8: FC Salzburg vs. Sevilla, VfL Wolfsburg vs. Lille

Lille: Need at least a point away to Wolfsburg to qualify, but if they lose they are sure to be in the Europa League. A victory assures top spot in the group, as does a draw if Salzburg do no win. Cannot qualify in the UCL with a loss.

FC Salzburg: A point at home to Sevilla sends them through. They can win the group with a victory if Lille draw or lose. Cannot go through in the UCL with a defeat, but it's enough for the Europa League if Wolfsburg lose or draw.

Sevilla: Have to win at Salzburg to qualify, which will be as group winners if Lille lose. A draw is enough for the Europa League as long as Wolfsburg do not win.

Wolfsburg: Might be bottom now, but they are guaranteed to finish no lower than second and qualify in the UCL if they win at home to Lille. Can also finish top if Salzburg-Sevilla is a draw. Cannot finish in third place.

GROUP H
Dec. 8: Zenit St Petersburg vs. Chelsea, Juventus vs. Malmo

Chelsea: Are through and only need to match Juve's result to top the group, which of course means a win makes that certain.

Juventus: Have also qualified, and have to better Chelsea's result to top the group.

Zenit St Petersburg: Have been eliminated but will drop into the Europa League.

Malmo: Are out of Europe.
