Miranda hoping for Diego Atletico return

Atletico Madrid defender Miranda has said he hopes Wolfsburg playmaker Diego Ribas will return to the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Diego spent the 2011-12 campaign on loan at Atletico, playing a key role in their upturn in fortunes under coach Diego Simeone in the second half of the season and scoring in the Europa League final as they won the trophy.

The 28-year-old then returned to Wolfsburg, but persistent speculation suggested that a permanent move from the Bundesliga to Atletico was imminent, only for financial problems to thwart any deal.

With the former Brazil international into the last 12 months of his Wolfsburg contract, Marca has reported that a move could be completed -- either for a knockdown price in January or on a free next summer -- should he agree to the reduced terms Atletico are offering.

And Miranda said he would warmly welcome him back, telling Brazilian publication Estadao: "As far as I know, the club is interested in signing him again.

"He is a great player, and our coach is a big fan of his style. He would be a great reinforcement and I hope we sign him." Diego declined to comment when contacted by Marca on Monday, saying only: “I prefer not to talk about this subject at this moment. I hope you understand that. Thanks.”

In August, he had said Atletico wanted to re-sign him but voiced uncertainty that it would happen, adding that "Simeone's ideas are not the same as those of the club's directors".
