Puygrenier wins points

Nancy came out on top in the battle between two relegated teams by claiming a 2-1 victory over Brest at the Stade Francis-Le Ble. Sebastian Puygrenier's first-half brace proved enough to guarantee all three points for Patrick Gabriel's men despite Charlison Benschop pulling a goal back at the death for Ligue 1's bottom club. Defeat for the hosts meant they had the unenviable record of suffering defeat in their previous 11 league fixtures. The visitors wasted no time in stamping their authority on the game and found themselves in front with just 10 minutes played. Thomas Mangani swung a corner in and Puygrenier arrived at the back post to send the ball beyond Alexis Thebaux. Puygrenier did not stop there, though, and doubled his side's lead on the half-hour mark when a free-kick fell into his path just eight yards out. The former Zenit St Petersburg defender was left with an easy finish to become the top scoring defender in Ligue 1 this season. Benoit Lesoimier did his best to drag his team back into the game on the stroke of half-time but the midfielder's 25-yard effort failed to test Damien Gregorini in the visitors' goal. With both teams already aware of their fate, the second half failed to entertain and neither side looked like finding the back of the net. Benschop went close on the hour mark and, after beating Puygrenier, he forced a save out of Gregorini from a tight angle. Brest continued to labour and Bruno Grougi fired a promising free-kick into the wall before Joel Sami forced a save from Thebaux at the other end with a looping header. The hosts did manage to pull a goal back in injury time but sadly for Corentin Martins' men it was a case of too little, too late. Florian Julien was the creator and he picked out Benschop who held off a Jordan Loties challenge before firing across Gregorini to give the Brest faithful something to cheer at the end of a very disappointing season.

                                              Beckham exits in tears

#INSERT type:image caption: David Beckham is lofted in the air by his PSG team-mates END# David Beckham rolled back the years with a vintage performance in what appeared to be the final match of a decorated career as Paris St Germain celebrated their Ligue 1 title triumph with a routine victory over already-relegated Brest. • Johnson: PSG celebrate title, bid adieu to Beckham Beckham announced he would retire at the end of this season in midweek and was handed the captain's armband before producing a performance worthy of his peak years, which included an assist, if not a goal. Zlatan Ibrahimovic threatened to overshadow the former England skipper's night with a brace in-between Blaise Matuidi's strike in the first half, but it was clear to see this evening belonged to Beckham. There is an outside chance he will play in PSG's final match at Lorient next Sunday, but the 38-year-old made a perhaps telling emotional exit in the 82nd minute by hugging most of his team-mates to a standing ovation from all at the Parc des Princes before making way for Ezequiel Lavezzi. The result was a mere formality, with the rot starting for Brest as early as the fifth minute when Clement Chantome passed to Ibrahimovic, whose first touch took him past his marker before he fired past Alexis Thebaux. The Brest goalkeeper quickly atoned for any fault he may have played in the opening goal by bursting off his line to intercept a wonderful Beckham ball over the top to Ibrahimovic. To their credit the visitors refused to lie down although the closest they came was a long-range drive from Kamel Chafni, which forced PSG custodian Salvatore Sirigu to tip away for a corner. Ibrahimovic continued to underline his threat by easily going past two defenders but his cross on the left by-line with the outside of his right foot was cut out. Brest were merely delaying the inevitable, however, and Beckham came to the fore as Carlo Ancelotti's men doubled their lead in the 32nd minute. The former England midfielder swung in a trademark corner and although Matuidi did not make proper contact with his half-volley, he still managed to get enough contact for the ball to find the back of the net. Four minutes later, after Mario Licka had fouled Matuidi 25 yards from goal, Beckham seemed destined to be given a chance to score. Instead, Ibrahimovic stepped up and curled the free-kick round the wall and into the top corner for his 29th league goal of the season, with the former England international leaping into the striker's arms immediately afterwards. The Swede nearly had his hat-trick shortly afterwards when he cut inside two defenders and although the goal seemed at his mercy, he could only volley wide. It was mattering little to the overall result, however, and it seemed he would have many more opportunities after the interval. It was strike partner Kevin Gameiro who should have got on the scoresheet at the start of the second half when he burst through on goal but saw his shot come back off Thebaux's legs. Beckham then once again underlined the threat he posed with a trademark cross to the unmarked Gameiro, whose miscued his diving header horribly wide. While Brest got the scoresheet in the 80th minute through Charlison Benschop, who beat the offside trap before firing past PSG substitute goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, it paled into insignificance when Beckham was substituted. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder was struggling to hold back the tears as the PSG players came to pay their respects to him, with the game coming to a complete standstill. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was also seen wiping away a tear as Beckham was replaced by Lavezzi. The rest of the match was conducted in a party-like atmosphere as PSG prepared to lift their first league crown since 1994.

Two goals from Sloan Privat moved Sochaux to the brink of safety, while condemning Brest to a defeat which leaves them on the brink of relegation to Ligue 2.
Privat's second-half double subjected Brest to an eighth successive defeat which means Landry Chauvin's team are six points from safety with just two games remaining.
Following a relatively quiet opening to the match, Sochaux's Vincent Nogueira came close to opening the scoring in the 20th minute but his superb half-volley was kept out by Alexis Thebaux.
In a frantic spell midway through the first half, Brest were desperately unlucky not to take the lead.
Firstly Simon Pouplin turned away Floyd Ayite's header before, from the resulting corner, Ayite once again forced the visitors' goalkeeper into a superb save to keep the scores level.
Then, just moments later, Florian Raspentino failed to get a telling touch to Benoit Lesoimier's delivery as the hosts began to turn the screw.
Privat failed to find the target shortly before the break with an acrobatic effort, ensuring both sides went into the interval level.
Pouplin's first-half efforts paid off shortly after half-time when his side took the lead following a mix-up in the Brest defence.
Giovanni Sio crossed from the left and some hesitancy from Bernard Mendy and Thebaux allowed Privat a simple finish into an open net.
Brest thought they had levelled just a few minutes later but Florian Lejeune's header from a Mario Licka free-kick was ruled out for offside.
Sochaux's dominance continued though and Sio pounced on a Thebaux parry but saw his goalbound effort cleared away by Tripy Makonda.
The visitors continued to impress and Thebaux needed to make a magnificent save to turn Rafael Dias' free-kick on to the bar.
Sochaux's persistence paid off though when they got a second goal with less than 10 minutes left to play.
Dias swung a corner in and Privat arrived at the near post to nod the ball beyond Thebaux and secure a second successive win for Eric Hely's men.

Brest dropped to the bottom of Ligue 1 following a 2-1 loss at Montpellier tonight.
Troyes' 1-0 victory at home to Evian saw Brest slip six points adrift of 17th-placed Nancy, who face Lyon tomorrow, with just three games of the season remaining.
Marco Estrada opened the scoring for the home side but Florian Raspentino quickly equalised before Souleymane Camara's second-half penalty handed Montpellier victory.
The outgoing champions took the lead after just 12 minutes as Remy Cabella found Estrada. The Chilean midfielder sprinted past Abdoul Sissoko and then unleashed a shot from 25 yards which gave Alexis Thebaux no chance.
But the lead lasted only nine minutes as Brest stunned the hosts on the counter attack.
Estrada's corner was gathered by Raspentino who charged up the field and exchanged passes with Charlison Benschop before firing past Geoffrey Jourdren from distance.
Montpellier could have gone back into the lead just before the half-hour but Thebaux made a good save from Estrada.
Camara then clipped the post with an effort six minutes after the break but Benoit Lesoimier should have given Brest the lead three minutes later as he found himself one-on-one with Jourdren, but the keeper made a fine save.
And with 17 minutes to go the visitors were made to pay as Ahmed Kantari felled Daniel Congre in the penalty area and Camara dispatched the spot-kick to Thebaux's left.
Cabella had the chance to put the match to bed in the 83rd minute but Thebaux was on hand to turn his speculative shot away.

                                                    Brest 0-2 Stade Rennes

Brest slipped nearer to Ligue 2 after defeat to Rennes today.
First-half goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Victor Montano did the damage and while Rennes remain in the top half of the table, Brest are concerned only with survival.
They are five points adrift of that line, though, a situation which would become even more bleak should Evian earn an unlikely result tomorrow against leaders Paris St Germain.
The hosts at least started in encouraging fashion today, Larsen Toure volleying just over from Bruno Grougi's cross.
But they fell behind before the half-hour mark as Burkina Faso playmaker Jonathan Pitroipa sent Doucoure in on goal and he fired low past goalkeeper Alexis Thebaux.
Grougi's free-kick was turned goalwards by Johan Martial but saved by Benoit Costil, and Brest fell further behind in the 37th minute.
Julien Feret was the provider with a well-judged pass which Montano nodded past Thebaux from close range to make it 2-0 at the interval.
Thebaux had to be at his best to prevent Doucoure making it three just five minutes after the break when the midfielder lashed Pitroipa's pass goalwards.
Brest should have cut the deficit in the 54th minute when the impressive Grougi crossed and Adama Ba inexplicably failed to convert from close range.
Another good pass from Grougi was superbly volleyed at goal by Benoit Lesoimier, only for Costil to produce an equally good save.
And Lesoimier turned provider a minute later when Ousmane Coulibaly forced an extraordinary point-blank save out of Costil.
It was not to be, though, for Brest, who must surely win their remaining home games against fellow strugglers Sochaux and Nancy if they are to stand any chance of preserving their top-flight status.
