TSG Hoffenheim 3-1 TSV Eintracht Braunschweig

Eintracht Braunschweig have been relegated from the Bundesliga following a 3-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on the final day of the season.
The Lions return to the 2.Bundesliga after one season in the top-flight, finishing the campaign bottom of the table having suffered defeat in their last five league fixtures.
Goals from Sebastian Rudy, Roberto Firmino and Kevin Volland, who has received a call-up to Germany's World Cup squad, finished the season on a high for Hoffenheim who end the campaign comfortably in ninth place.
Jan Hochscheidt grabbed a consolation for Eintracht Braunschweig with a minute left, just the 29th goal of the campaign for the league's lowest scorers.
With goals flying in at Mainz and Schalke, who were facing relegation-battlers Nurnberg and Hamburg, Braunschweig's efforts to remain in the league had a surprisingly slow start.
Hoffenheim took the lead after 15 minutes when Andreas Beck picked out the on-running Rudy who headed cleverly into the corner of the net.
The one-way traffic from the third highest-scorers in the Bundesliga continued well after the break, despite events elsewhere.
Liverpool target Firmino smashed home a brilliant volley from the edge of the box in the 64th minute to make it 2-0.
And the stuffing was well and truly knocked out of Braunschweig when Volland converted from close range after poor goalkeeping in the lead-up.
Brauncschweig's last moment in the Bundesliga came with one minute left when Hochscheidt steamed through to score a consolation.
The result means Brauncschweig finished the season on 25 points from 34 games, two points adrift of the relegation play-off.
ends

Raul Bobadilla scored deep into stoppage time to keep Augsburg's hopes alive of qualifying for Europe next season with a 1-0 win, while leaving Eintracht Braunschweig at the foot of the table.
The Argentinian came off the bench 10 minutes from the end of a tense encounter to score the decisive goal with practically the last kick of the game.
With Hamburg and Nurnberg also losing on the penultimate weekend of the season, bottom-placed Braunschweig do still have the chance of avoiding automatic relegation on the final day, although to do that they will need to reverse a four-game losing streak at Hoffenheim.
Augsburg host Eintracht Frankfurt next Saturday with only a point between them and seventh-placed Mainz, who occupy the Bundesliga's last berth in the Europa League next season.
Braunschweig made a bright start with the Eintracht Stadion united behind their team, urging them on from the get-go.
Dominik Kumbela went close with a diving header, but Augsburg crafted some even better chances, despite playing a waiting game.
Sascha Molders was denied by Daniel Davari with a string of long-range efforts all warning the hosts that Augsburg were not in a charitable mood.
Braunschweig appeared to have invested too much in the game in the first half as they slowly tired in the second 45 minutes as Augsburg gained the upper hand.
Nevertheless, it was Torsten Lieberknecht's men who had the chance to snatch victory in the last minute of regular time when substitute Salim Khelifi, just a minute after being brought on, was denied by an excellent reaction save from Marwin Hitz.
The home fans' disappointment at seeing that chance go begging was amplified in stoppage time when Andre Hahn's backheeled pass set up Bobadilla to lift the ball over Davari and snatch a last-gasp win for Augsburg.
ends

Eintracht Braunschweig's Bundesliga survival hopes were left hanging by a thread as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Hertha Berlin.
Goals from John Anthony Brooks and Sami Allagui ensured victory for Berlin which consolidates their 11th place in the standings while leaving Braunschweig now certain of a finish inside the bottom three.
That means the only way Torsten Lieberknecht's men can now survive is by finishing 16th and earning a play-off against the side who finish third in the 2. Bundesliga, and two wins out of two are likely to be required for that to be possible.
Braunschweig knew how important a win was to keep their survival hopes alive, but they seemed more frozen with fear than eager to act.
Berlin did all of the running and, although they did not create many openings, they always looked to have the upper hand.
They should have made their dominance count midway through the first half when Alexander Baumjohann's low cross left Allagui a simple finish, but he somehow managed to miss the ball completely from close range.
The hosts had another chance to take the lead just before the interval when Sandro Wagner set up Baumjohann, but Daniel Davari made a telling intervention.
Berlin took a deserved lead on the hour mark with a corner from the right.
Davari missed his punch and the ball fell out to Brooks who struck it into the top left-hand corner, past the defender on the goal line.
Jos Luhukay's men doubled their lead in the 77th minute through Allagui.
Davari did all he could to try to keep Braunschweig in the game, saving twice from Adrian Ramos, but the Braunschweig goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent Allagui from scoring at the third attempt.
ends

#INSERT
type:image
caption:Claudio Pizarro opened the scoring for Bayern in the 75th minute.
END#

Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 triumph at relegation-threatened Eintracht Braunschweig.

In what was little more than a warm-up for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final clash with Real Madrid, Bayern were still far from their best, but did the bare minimum to beat the bottom-placed Bundesliga side.

Claudio Pizarro put them in front in the 75th minute before Mario Mandzukic sealed victory five minutes from time.

Pep Guardiola's men therefore end a three-game winless run in the Bundesliga, leaving Braunschweig with just three games left to survive.

Guardiola rotated as much as he could, with only 14 first-team players at his disposal.

Jerome Boateng fitted in at left full-back while Pierre Hojbjerg started with Thomas Muller left on the bench. Meanwhile, Pizarro was preferred to Mandzukic in the attack.

Jan Hochscheidt was in the thick of the action early on, throwing his weight around in the Braunschweig attack and making a nuisance of himself, without testing Lukas Raeder until the 25th minute with a weak shot which was easy for Manuel Neuer's understudy to collect.

Hojbjerg missed Bayern's best chance soon after when he blazed the ball over from Arjen Robben's pull back.

Braunschweig gave as good as they got, but lacked incision in their attack against a Bayern side who seemed just to be going through the motions, saving energy for Wednesday.

They stepped up a gear in the second half, finally forcing Braunschweig onto the back foot, and making the breakthrough in the 75th minute.

Mario Gotze received the ball in a borderline offside position and stroked it into the penalty area for Pizarro, who lifted his shot inside the near post to celebrate having scored at least once against every side currently in the Bundesliga - his 172nd Bundesliga goal.

Mandzukic then came on, and did not need much time to get his name on the scoresheet, threading the ball through the legs of Braunschweig goalkeeper Daniel Davari to secure the points in the 85th minute.

ends

SC Freiburg 2-0 TSV Eintracht Braunschweig

Freiburg picked up a crucial three points in the battle for survival, winning 2-0 at home against Eintracht Braunschweig.
An own goal from Damir Vrancic and one from Julian Schuster moved Christian Streich's side out of the Bundesliga's bottom three with some room to breathe over their rivals below.
Freiburg had the upper hand from the off in this relegation six-pointer and had the ball in the net, somewhat fortuitously, after eight minutes.
Oliver Sorg's long, aimless throw-in from the right was bundled past Daniel Davari by team-mate Vrancic, who knew little about the bouncing ball.
Braunschweig had come into the match off the back of a fine run of form, including wins over Mainz and Hannover and a draw at Bayer Leverkusen, but they rarely tested Freiburg in the first 30 minutes.
An early injury to captain Dominik Kumbela summed up their afternoon and he was replaced by veteran Dennis Kruppke.
A half-chance for Havard Nielsen, last week's derby hero, was not enough to put Freiburg on the back foot for a sustained period.
After the break, Christian Streich's side doubled their advantage inside three minutes when Schuster's speculative shot from 35 yards took a wicked deflection off Emir Bickacic and beat a helpless Davari.
Kruppke then struck the post from a 25-yard free-kick on the hour mark, with home goalkeeper Oliver Baumann rooted to the spot.
Freiburg's attacking performance was being upstaged by Davari, who made a string of good saves to deny Admir Mehmedi, who also struck the crossbar with a fine effort.
The Braunschweig keeper made two more fantastic saves in the last 15 minutes - one from Jonathan Schmid's deceptive free-kick and Mehmedi's back-post header.
However, it was not enough to prevent the basement boys from going down at Freiburg, who kept their first home clean sheet of the season.
ends

TSV Eintracht Braunschweig 3-0 Hannover 96

Eintracht Braunschweig sent Hannover crashing to their fourth straight defeat in the Bundesliga, giving their own survival hopes a boost with a 3-0 win at the Eintracht Stadion.
Domi Kumbela, Havard Nilsson and Jan Hochscheidt were on target as Torsten Lieberknecht's men completed the double over their local rivals and moved to within two point of safety with their biggest win of the season.

Hannover, who ended the game with 10 men after Andre Hoffmann was shown a red card, now have to look over their shoulders heading into the final five games of the season, with only two points separating them from the bottom three.

Spice was added to the local derby in Lower Saxony by the fact that both clubs needed the points in their respective battles against relegation.

Braunschweig, urged on by a partisan crowd, went close to opening the scoring in the 12th minute when Kumbela sent his shot over from 12 yards out.

Two minutes later Kumbela was in the right place at the right time to tuck the ball in after Ron Robert Zieler pushed Ken Reichel's cross out to his feet.

Seven minutes later Braunschweig doubled their lead when a long ball from deep landed in the path of Nielsen and he let it bounce just once before sweeping it past Zieler with a fine left-footed volley into the far corner.

Hannover tried to respond, but their hopes were dealt a setback when Hoffmann kicked out at Mirko Boland, referee Peter Gagelmann seeing the offence and producing a red card.

Despite being a man down, Hannover did not throw in the towel and almost pulled a goal back when Szabolcs Huszti's shot came back off a post.

It was not to be, though, and, as their belief in a recovery waned, they conceded a third.

Karim Bellarabi squared the ball for Hochscheidt, who crowned the win with the final goal in the 89th minute.

ends

Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 TSV Eintracht Braunschweig

Bayer Leverkusen were jeered off the field by their own fans at the BayArena after being held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-placed Eintracht Braunschweig.
Ken Reichel gave the visitors the lead early in the second half before a penalty from Stefan Kiessling saved the hosts from an even worse result.
They nevertheless saw their advantage over fifth-placed Wolfsburg reduce to a single point, jeopardising their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season, and drawing derision from their own fans.
Leverkusen had ended their nine-game winless streak in midweek, but that did not seem to have settled them particularly much.
Faced with a side fighting for their lives at the foot of the table, they found it hard to break their opponents down, succeeding only once in the first half with Andres Guardado's early shot missing the target.
It was an otherwise predominantly scrappy affair, the kind of game which suited Braunschweig more than their hosts, and they took the lead early in the second half with their first effort of the game.
Mirko Boland's cross was met on the volley by Reichel, who drilled the ball into the top corner from a tight angle, leaving Bernd Leno no chance and turning the BayArena silent.
Leverkusen responded with their best chance of the game so far, a Lars Bender effort which Daniel Davari pushed away from his goal.
In the 52nd minute, Leverkusen were gifted a route back into the game when Marcel Correia handled the ball inside the penalty area.
Kiessling stepped up to the spot to score for the fourth game running, taking his tally for the season to 14.
It only relieved the tension marginally, and only momentarily too as Leverkusen's failure to push for a second soon saw the fans turn against them.
Faced not only with a fighting Braunschweig side, the Leverkusen players also had to cope with the growing weight of expectation and, although they increased the pressure on their opponents late on, they could not create any clearcut chances.
In the very last minute, they almost lost the game too with Boland's shot saved well by Leno, although he could not save his side from the fans' frustration come the final whistle.
ends

Eintracht Braunschweig gave their Bundesliga survival chances a monumental lift with a 3-1 victory over high-flying Mainz.
Torsten Lieberknecht's side only had 18 points on the board heading into Tuesday's match, but fine goals from Dominik Kumbela and Havard Nielsen refuelled their ambitions of securing a place in the top flight next season.
But Kumbela's third - and second of the night - was a sensational bicycle kick that was worthy of rubber-stamping the three points.
The clash in Braunschweig took fourth-rating on the Bundesliga card - but there was a substantial amount riding on the encounter.
Perhaps surprisingly considering the league standings - but not undeserved over 18 minutes - the hosts took the lead through captain Kumbela who finished from close range.
The advantage lasted the best part of two minutes until sharp-shooter Muller tapped home Zdenek Pospech's cross-cum-shot from right-back.
But it was the basement boys who went into half-time holding the keys to the three points.
A scrappy set-piece was not cleared on several occasions by the normally ruthless Mainz defence.
Instead, Nielsen snatched at his shot which trundled through the hands of Loris Karius in the visiting goal and sneaked inside the post.
The second 45 minutes played out to Braunschweig's game plan with Mainz unable to carve open a compact home defence.
Even the introduction of Japanese international striker Shinji Okazaki from the bench came to nothing for Thomas Tuchel's men.
Yet the lack of scoring chances was fitting considering Kumbela's top class overhead kick finish on 74 minutes from 12 yards.
ends

Schalke bounced back from Tuesday's Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid with a 3-1 win over Eintracht Braunschweig, a victory that helped to keep the Bundesliga title race alive for at least a few more days
Leon Goretzka got the ball rolling after 17 minutes before Klaas Jan Huntelaar converted a superb free-kick on 66 minutes to make it 2-0.
Eintracht Braunschweig pulled one back through Omar Elabdellaoui's deflected strike on 81 minutes but it was not enough to deny Schalke, who wrapped up the win with a stoppage-time third from Adam Szalai.
Schalke, along with second-placed Borussia Dortmund, needed victories on Saturday to ensure Bayern Munich could not win the title this weekend and the home side dominated from the off at the Veltins Arena.
Teenager Max Meyer forced a bright save from Daniel Davari in the first minute after the ball fell sweetly into the midfielder's path, courtesy of Huntelaar's face.
But Schalke's dominance would be converted into goals in the 17th minute when Meyer found Goretzka who charged forward and smashed home from 25 yards.
It was the 18-year-old's third league goal of the season following his summer transfer from Bochum.
Davari's job in the Braunschweig goal was difficult enough, but some poor defending in the first half made his life harder.
Meyer tested the Iran international on 23 minutes, while Huntelaar was denied by a good save from the keeper 10 minutes later.
But the former Real Madrid striker would find his rhythm on 66 minutes, smashing home a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner, leaving the Braunschweig keeper helpless.
Eintracht were restricted to just a couple of challenging attacking moves throughout the 90 minutes with the hero of recent months, Ralf Fahrmann, tipping over from Dominick Kumbela with 15 minutes left.
The Royal Blues suffered a scare when Elabdalloaui's shot rolled past Fahrmann with eight minutes to play to make it 2-1, but Szalai's third late on secured the points for Jens Keller's side.
ends

Bottom-placed Eintracht Braunschweig earned a valuable point in their fight against relegation from the Bundesliga by holding Wolfsburg to a 1-1 draw.
Luiz Gustavo put the Wolves ahead after 36 minutes, but Karim Bellarabi salvaged a point for the hosts three minutes after the interval.
The result was Braunschweig's third straight draw and kept them three points adrift of fourth-bottom Stuttgart and extended Wolfsburg's winless run to three games.
Braunschweig remained last in the table but picked up their third straight draw and have lost just once in the last five games for 18 points.
The first chance of the game fell to Wolfsburg in the 21st minute as Maximilian Arnold's free-kick was deflected off the wall and just wide of goal.
Wolfsburg took the lead nine minutes before half-time when Braunschweig goalkeeper Daniel Davari stopped Naldo's header but the ball struck defender Ken Reichel and fell kindly for Luiz Gustavo to hammer home.
Braunschweig equalised just three minutes after the restart, though. Domi Kumbela crossed from the right side into the middle, where Bellarabi blasted a volley past Diego Benaglio from eight yards out.
Davari made a great save from Ricardo Rodriguez soon after and Wolfsburg went close again four minutes later when Bas Dost's shot flew just over the crossbar.
Braunschweig went even closer midway through the second period when Reichel's long-distance drive was deflected just over the bar.
Both teams made all three substitutions in the final 18 minutes in a bid to regain control but neither was able to find a winner.
ends

Stuttgart brought an end to their eight-game losing streak, but a 2-2 draw at home to bottom-placed Eintracht Braunschweig may not be enough to keep coach Thomas Schneider in a job.
Jan Hochscheidt gave the visitors the lead, but Alexandru Maxim and Martin Harnik turned the game on its head to leave Stuttgart ahead going into the final 10 minutes.
They could not hold on for a much-needed win, though, as Ermin Bicakcic equalised eight minutes from time to keep Braunschweig's own hopes of avoiding the drop alive.
After losing eight games in a row, it was only natural that Stuttgart lacked confidence against a side who were putting pressure on them from the off.
Hochscheidt had the ball in the back of the net in the 13th minute, but was fortunate not to be shown a yellow card since the whistle for offside had long since sounded.
He scored a perfectly valid goal midway through the first half, though, to give Braunschweig the lead.
Karim Bellarabi advanced down the left with the ball at his feet and he cut inside before crossing the ball, with the aid of a deflection, into the path of Hochscheidt, who beat Sven Ulreich stylishly.
Stuttgart, who have not managed to win a game after falling 1-0 down so far this season, were up against that record and some already disgruntled fans, but they responded well, equalising within six minutes.
Maxim, whose glaring miss a week ago prompted their collapse against Eintracht Frankfurt, this time scored a more difficult goal from close range, showing more strength than Bicakcic to bundle the ball in.
Five minutes later, Stuttgart took the lead with Maxim this time the provider, crossing for Harnik to take the ball down on his chest before sending his shot into the left-hand corner from outside the area.
Stutttgart could have wrapped up victory in the 52nd minute when Daniel Davari fouled Harnik inside the penalty area.
However, the Braunschweig goalkeeper made amends for his mistake by keeping Christian Gentner's spot-kick out.
For the second week running, Stuttgart missed a glorious opportunity to open up a two-goal lead, and once again, they were punished.
Dominik Kumbela flicked the ball on from a corner to Bicakcic, who made up for his failure to prevent Maxim's goal to score what could prove to be a crucial goal for Braunschweig, and for Schneider.
ends

Two extraordinary own goals, both by goalkeepers, ensured Eintracht Braunschweig and Borussia Monchengladbach took a point apiece from a 1-1 draw at the Eintracht Stadion.
Daniel Davari was first to turn the ball into his own net and give Gladbach the lead before the highly-rated Marc-Andre ter Stegen was left with egg on his face with an even worse error of his own gifting Braunschweig a point.
The Foals tried harder to get the win in the closing stages, and take Ter Stegen out of the firing line, but Davari was not going to be beaten again.
The Iran international was not so fortunate earlier on though as his 24th-minute mistake put Gladbach ahead.
Davari really should have collected Raffael's inswinging corner but he appeared to have been distracted by his defender on the near post, possibly expecting his team-mate to clear the danger, and could only watch in horror as the ball hit his thigh and rebounded into the net.
It was the visitors' first real attack after spending much of the match up to that point in their own half defending.
Braunschweig continued to attack, yet once again it was the visitors who threatened the most when Branimir Hrgota was denied by a fine save from Davari, making up in part for his earlier gaffe.
It was then Ter Stegen's turn to drop a clanger to allow the hosts to draw level in the 52nd minute.
There appeared little danger as Filip Daems played a harmless-looking pass back to Ter Stegen, but the Germany goalkeeper, who is reportedly close to joining Barcelona, made an uncharacteristic error that will give him sleepless nights.
In seemingly trying to move the ball across goal onto his preferred right foot, he managed only to divert the back-pass - which was going wide - into his own net.
Wanting to save their goalkeeper from the inevitable blame in the event of a draw, Gladbach moved up a gear and Hrgota was once again denied by Davari.
Davari was then beaten by Max Kruse, but the shot bounced back off the inside of the post.
Peniel Mlapa did have the ball in the back of the net late on, but the goal was ruled out for offside as the points were shared.
ends

Rafael Schafer saved two penalties as Nurnberg came from behind to beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 with 10 men, missing a spot-kick of their own in a dramatic battle at the Frankenstadion.
Per Nilsson was given his marching orders minutes before Dominik Kumbela put Braunschweig ahead.
Kumbela was then denied a second from the spot by Schafer before two goals in as many minutes at the start of the second half from Hiroshi Kiyotake and Tomas Pekhart turned the game on its head.
Ermin Bicakcic was next to be denied by Schafer before Kiyotake returned the favour by missing a penalty at the other end, but Nurnberg held on to their fourth win in five games in 2014.
Braunschweig appeared transformed by their 4-2 win over Hamburg last weekend and they certainly showed no fear against their fellow strugglers.
Kumbela had the chance to beat Raphael Schafer in the 15th minute, but he missed the target as Nurnberg suffered their first fright of the afternoon.
The Bavarians were reduced to 10 men after half an hour when Nilsson tripped Havard Nielsen as the last defender, with the Braunschweig forward denied a clear run at goal.
Before the hosts could reorganise their defence, with Ondrej Petrak sent on for Timo Gebhart, they fell behind.
Norman Theuerkauf's corner beat Markus Feulner and was met from close range by Kumbela, who headed Braunschweig in front.
It could have got even worse for Nurnberg five minutes before half-time when Schafer brought down Kumbela inside the penalty area. He was only shown a yellow card and prevented further damage by denying Kumbela from the spot.
Nurnberg could count themselves lucky to be only one goal behind at the break, and to have 10 men still on the field, but their fortunes changed in just two minutes after the break.
First, Kiyotake brought them level with a fine shot from outside the penalty area practically straight from the kick-off.
Pekhart then gave Nurnberg the lead when Josip Drmic saw him completely unmarked and gave him the ball on the edge of the area, from where he beat Marjan Petkovic.
Schafer was not going to be beaten, at least not from the penalty spot, as he once again kept Braunschweig out, this time Bicakcic was the man to be frustrated after Nielsen was brought down inside the area in the 63rd minute.
Nurnberg got a penalty of their own five minutes later, but Kiyotake was denied by Petkovic.
It did not prove to be a costly miss, though, as Gertjan Verbeek's men held on to rise to 12th in the Bundesliga table - their highest position of the season so far.
ends

Dominik Kumbela heaped the pressure on Hamburg coach Bert van Marwijk with a hat-trick in Eintracht Braunschweig's 4-2 Bundesliga win over the northern strugglers.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga put Hamburg ahead with their first goal of 2014, but two Kumbela goals turned the game around.
Ivo Ilicevic brought Hamburg on terms once again, but Kumbela completed his hat-trick before Jan Hochscheidt sealed victory for Torsten Lieberknecht's men, who are now just a point adrift of Hamburg at the foot of the table.
Felix Magath may no longer be looming to take Van Marwijk's place - the veteran coach took the Fulham job on Friday - but that did not mean his position was any safer as Hamburg sought to avoid a seventh straight league defeat.
After an even start, the visitors took the lead in rather bizarre fashion.
Marcel Jansen sent in a long throw-in which was headed on by Lasogga, who had his back to goal and appeared merely to be helping the ball on into the danger area.
However, it looped over goalkeeper Daniel Divari and nestled in the far corner of the Braunschweig goal.
It was the stroke of luck Hamburg needed to score their first goal of 2014, and it appeared to give them a psychological boost too.
Rafael van der Vaart went close with a direct free-kick which Davari managed to push away at the last minute before Ilicevic wasted a good chance in the second half when he completely missed the ball from Ola John's cross.
It was a costly miss as, moments later, Braunschweig levelled through Kumbela.
Karim Bellarabi's cross was flapped at by Rene Adler with the ball falling to the Braunschweig striker, who kept his cool to bag his third goal of the season.
His fourth followed on the hour mark when he was quickest to meet Mirko Boland's cross to score from close range.
Kumbela, who had only entered the action as a half-time substitute, almost completed his hat-trick to make it three for Braunschweig, but Adler made a fine save to deny him and keep Hamburg in the game.
Hamburg fought back defiantly and levelled through Ilicevic's fine shot with the outside of his boot in the 76th minute.
That goal stung Braunschweig, who responded with Kumbela's third goal after Adler did all he could to keep two shots out.
Bellarabi nearly sealed things in stoppage time before Hochscheidt completed the victory on the next counter-attack for the hosts.
ends
